.54 Rene flinter

Well looks like I'm all set up now to retry shooting my used Renegade. I got a new (used) stock on Ebay which T/C is going to reimburse me for! My .54 cal over powder wads came in and I bought some .010" patches (couldn't find .015").
Looks like the weather is going to be nice on Sunday so I'm going to try it then and see if my patches hold up and don't blow apart. I really want to shoot only PRBs out of this. If it doesn't shoot well, I may just get the rifling changed to a 1:70. But I will first try conicals. Also finally get to shoot my newly acquired .44 lever gun. I'd go tomorrow but its spring turkey season here in PA and I will be out in the AM chasing them.

If the PRBs don't shoot well, anyone have a conical suggestion for the 1:48 Renegade .54?

those thin patches might not work well for you.

As for a conical bullet.. the maxi ball shoot real well.

I'm going to be using the .010 patches and pillow tick plus the wads. We shall see.

A PRB always shot really good from my old Renegade .54. Later i went to a GM 1-70 barrel, and really didn't see a huge difference in accuracy.

The GM did show better accuracy if I use a heavy charge of powder. If I stayed around 80gr it was too close to call. The GM was better at offhand shooting though, because of the added weight.

Overall, the TC barrel was pretty damn accurate with a PRB.

The only problem I ever had getting PRB to shoot is when I tried to use 777 old crud ring either blew or burned the patches unless I put a wad over the powder which I consider ridiculous there is enough to carry and handle with out adding something you should not need.

That's interesting. I say that because my .54 GM 1:70 stacks PRB right on top of the other at 50 yds with 80 gr of FFg and .018" patch. If the Renegade does 1/2 as good I will be happy. The only reason I got this Rene is to use during PA's primitive season where only flintlock and open sights are permitted.

Add a PRB to the laws, and we have a perfect ML season. As it should be.

Are you listening Colorado?

Hardly...:(

Actually MH, that's exactly how it was when it started in the early '70s. That lasted for several years then they decided you could use a conical or saboted bullet. Now just last year you were permitted to use a peep type sight. But we still have a week long 'early ml season' where you can use a scoped inline or caplock ml.
The requirement for both season is that the rifle must be larger than .44 cal.

I know how it started. It never should have changed.

All states should have a real primitive season, and it should be as long as the archery season.

My dream that will never come true.
