To anyone who has scoped a side lock.
What do you do to keep powder fouling from getting under your scope bases. I take a hot glue gun and run a bead of hot glue along the barrel and scope base where I believe there might be a chance of fouling getting under the scope base. When I clean the rifle the hardened glue peels right off.

Do you really need a scope for squirrels?
|
I refuse to wear glasses when I hunt, so, yes I do.
|
I'd never shoot a sidelock without glasses. You shouldn't either.
Even if you use a scope. |
Thanks for the advice...DAD. Now, what does this have to do with my question?
|
Take the scope off, and wear glasses.
Problem solved son. :p |
I pour cleaner in that crack and the wipe it out with Q tips and it seems to get all the fouling out. But that's an interesting idea you have there, although.. you then replace the hot glue each time? If that's the case, why not smear some Vaseline or something like that, in there and then later wipe it out.
|
I use soapy water and a 1" paint brush, followed by flushing with clean water, followed by a blast with carb cleaner.
|
I do replace the glue each time before going out to shoot the rifle. It only takes a minute. It takes a lot longer just waiting for the glue gun to heat up. You should try it.
I think the heat would run the grease , along with the residue, under the scope base. |
Why not just use some vaseline? That's what they do hunting the coastal areas of Alaska. They apply a coating of it between the stock and barrel to keep the salt water mist from getting under the barrel.
