I would also recommend a different bullet. However, if you want to stick with the Shockwaves, consider using the bonded 250 grain version instead. Loose powder is better as well. Personally, for elk I would use something in the 275 - 350 grain range with 100 - 120 grains loose powder....

all I can tell you is that I have shot two elk with full bore size .54 cal projectiles (one conical 435 grs. one RB .527 about 219 grs.) and I was fortunate to get very good shot placement both times. Pretty much bang, flop, one round each. Both went completely through the animals. In every study I have read about killing men or animals, the bigger wound channel and deeper it goes is better. That's why I wont shoot a saboted pistol bullet at an elk. I know other that disagree with me and have their reasons to do so. Happy day.
