What Next?
I have been thinking a lot about what my next black powder purchase will be. I have narrowed my choices down to three.
1-A new Green Mountain barrel for the first black powder rifle I ever owned. I was thinking about a 32" .54 caliber 1:70" twist for the old Hawkins. The original .50 caliber barrel still gets it done but I would like to breath some new life into it. 2-A new Green Mountain barrel for my $30.00 Renegade. Since I can put a .54 caliber barrel on the Hawkins but not a .58 caliber barrel, I would be looking to outfit the Renegade with a 32" .58 caliber 1:70" twist barrel. 3-A Thompson Center .58 caliber Big Boar rifle. I don't even know if the third choice is still available but I will be checking that out in the near future. If it is still available and I can get it for a good price that may be the route I will be taking. In any case I will be pulling the trigger on one of these choices very soon. |
Just curious what you have to hunt in Maryland that needs a .58 cal?
I'd put the .54 GMB on the Hawken. |
Why muley, you know there are those big old nasty sika deer lurking in Maryland? And then you have the whitetails. And yes, even a few black bear.

In Maryland......Big Foot!

I recommend the .58 for the Renne Pluckit. It will make you walk with a swagger and think of the rest of the guys as girlymen. :D

Damn squirrel is scary.
Maybe a .62 is needed. |
No such thing as too big a gun. That 58 caliber would be a lot of fun and they are real accurate. You have black bear.. that would be fun to shoot. Even a deer.. that 58 is not too big. It just plants them faster. Good luck with your choice.

pluckit,
It sure would be nice to find a good clean Big Boar .58, I would love to have one of those myself. One thing for certain if you find one, you'll pay dearly for it. BPS |
I went to the little sporting goods store where I saw the Thompson Center Big Boar rifle a while back to see if it was still there and make an offer for it but the guy said it had sold. At least that gives me one less decision to make and pretty well makes it easy for me to decide what move I am going to make. I will be ordering a .58 caliber Green Mountain barrel for the Thompson Center Renegade. Now, who should I get it from? Pecatonica River Long rifle Supply Co. has them for $200.00 and their shipping seems reasonable. That's $23.00 les than getting it from Green Mountain. But I owe Dennis ( I think his name is), the customer service guy at Green Mountain, a favor. So I feel I should order directly from Green Mountain. I would feel more comfortable doing it that way also.

I can almost feel that bad boy kicking the crap out of my skinny but right now!
