Just got some news from my son. He's stationed in El Paso TX at Fort Bliss in the 1st Armoured Division. They had a photographer with them on a recent training exercise and they took pics of him during training. He is a 240 gunner attached to the 4-17th. He recieved the coin from the Command Sgt. Major. He and and another gunner was the only two in the battalion to earn the coins.

sjsfire,
Congratulations on raising a fine Son and please give him our heartfelt thanks for his service to our Country. I do have one question though...What do both the word Buffalo and the symbol on the coin stand for? Please excuse my ignorance, I have never served in the military. BPS |
Every item that's contained on that coin is very well documented and symbolizes part of the history of the 17th Regiment which goes back at least as far as the Civil War and which can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/17th_In...United_States) For instance: The buffalo, shown on the blue shield bellow the stone wall represents the Regiments glorious history in the Korean war. The "Buffalo" nickname was adopted after one of the Regiment's Commanding Officers in the Korean war, Col. William W. "Buffalo Bill" Quinn. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Arm...United_States) |
