Renegade questions

I've been pondering the idea of a Renegade. I've been thinking about taking up shooting heavy conicals, but not totally sure. I've looked around and can't find any Renegades close to me. So I've started looking online. I have a few questions.
What would be a good price for an unfired, NIB percussion Renegade?
If I primarily plan to shoot conicals and don't have much interest in shooting PRB at this point, would I be better to have a 1 in 48 twist barrel, or a 1 in 28 from Green Mtn?
If I'm going to have to order something from the internet, I'm contemplating just using ebay, gunbroker, etc. and piecing one together to be what I want, so this would give me some different options for caliber and twist.
Any suggestions?

IMO, buy a stock off ebay, refinish it and then buy the GMB if you want to shoot conicals. May check out track of the wolf.com and look at their barrel blank selections and then have them fit it to a tc breech plug.

Not a bad idea. I hadn't thought of having TOTW build a barrel for it. Since they're only about 20 minutes from me, it might be a good option.

MountainDevil54 02-25-2012 11:09 AM

It might cost you a bit more but IMO it will be darn well worth it in the end. Plus you can have it cut to your preferred length. That custom barrel on my renegade is 2" longer but LIGHTER in weight than the factory barrel thats only 26" length.

SuperKirby 02-25-2012 11:37 AM

Probably would be a little more, but then it looks like a stock on ebay is under $50, and misc. metal parts are pretty cheap as well. I could probably do the entire gun with custom barrel for under $500.

You will not want a 1-48 twist to shoot long heavy conicals. A GM-LRH drop in will work for you if you can find one...

This one of mine...

And this the other...

Both barrels a 15/16" across the flats and dropped into a 1" barrel channel of the Renegade - works great.

These things shoot the .503-460 grain Bull Shop Conical - GREAT

I get great accuracy big those big 454gr Lee conicals i cast up. Extremely great accuracy actually.

I have a renegade with gr Mt 1:28 45 barrel I might part with

SuperKirby 02-25-2012 11:59 AM

Sabotloader, I really like yours with the stainless barrel and recoil pad. That's almost exactly what I'm looking for.
Is it correct that for conicals a .45 would be better than a 50? My thought is that the .45 would have a lot more options?

builder459 02-25-2012 12:17 PM

Buying a stock and then a drop in GMB LRH barrel in .50 cal is the way to go for strictly shooting conicals.they even market a 21" carbine barrel, if weight is a concern.

SuperKirby 02-25-2012 12:22 PM

That 21" stainless barrel was originally what I was wanting when I first started looking a month or so ago. Problem is according to their website they don't have them anymore. I don't know if they'll start making them again? It would sure make for a nice woods gun.
How much would the 21" barrel affect accuracy at longer ranges? Most of my shots would be pretty close, but I do hav a couple places that I could hunt that I would be able to take shots up to about 200 yards? Is that something that would be possible about this type of gun or would that be a good day to take a different gun?

Kirby if your just looking to shoot conicals and it doesn't have to be a traditional rifle. the Knight wolverines are excellent conical shooters and you can pick up NIB blue/ blacks for $150.00 or buy one direct from knight camoed/blue for $289.00.

SuperKirby 02-25-2012 12:30 PM

I guess it wouldn't have to be, but it just kind of seem like a traditional would be the right thing to do with conicals.

Actually the Knight wolverine is a plunger style like the White rifles, which are considered one of the best conical shooters ever made.Knight rifles can also shoot conicals almost as well as a White rifles.

Were it me I would go with the 50 first - I believe there are a lot more options in the projectile line with it than the 45.

Plus there are a lot of places that still require a 50 to hunt larger big game with.

I was tempted to tell that it is for sale, but I think I will hang on to it a bit longer...

what do you consider a heavy conical? I have a friend with a TC hawken .54 that shoots consistent 3 inch groups at 100 yards with a 430 maxi ball, I have a .54 TC greyhawk that shoots about the same size groups with the same maxiball, both with open sites and I'm sure they would do a little better with a scope. I also have a Cabelas hawken that will hold about a 4 inch group with the same bullet. All are 1-48 twist I believe.

The beauty of the Bull Shop conicals or even the No Excuse - they are 'slip fit' - no short starter needed.

Dan at Bull Shope will size them to your bore for you so you can just push them in with your thumb and then home with the ram rod..

Here are some examples of Dan's offerings..

This will drop right in a Renegade. It says "quantities are limited"
