The group with the 300 grainers is mighty impressive. With 80 grains of powder that should provide a mighty wallop, I would have no doubts about using that for deer. I believe Lane Nebraska used to use the .45 cal 300 grain Platinums with a similar powder charge with devastating effect.....

So the Platinum PowerBelt conicals are supposed to be able to hold up to the magnum charges you're saying? What of the copper coated ones?

Platinums have a sharper taper at the nose as well as a much smaller hollow point. Those 2 changes along helped them be better bullets. Still a lot to change though IMO.

The Platinum was Powerbelts answer to the copper PB's blowing up.

Well that is good to know. So you're saying the Platinum can handle a stronger charge and still be a good solid terminal performance bullet?

Still I see no reason to ever push one more then 100 grains. But I have no field experience with them. I judge them a lot by what Mountain Devil has accomplished with them. One reason for the 80 grains. But that 80 grains is sure an accurate load.

exactly.

Magnum loads though are still intended for when you know the shots will be 140+ yards.

I don't ever do magnum loads. If I ever use PB's it will be the Platinums. Just for the insurance that they'll hold up better. Plus, just like you. I found them very accurate.

When I had my Optima i was shooting pretty small groups with the 338 gr Plats. It was going to be my elk load. I was using 100 gr of BH, but for me. The recoil was more than I wanted. It actually made me turn to the .270. Then I realized I like a ML better than the CF's which I used to love. I find a CF gun kind of boring now.

If I end up getting an MR. I'll shoot a .270 Platinum with RS to tame the recoil, and get closer for elk. I'll still shoot the flint for deer. If I don't get the MR. i'll shoot the flint for deer and elk.

I'm just trying to cover all my bases, but at the moment. I have faith in the Platinum. I think you'd be happy with it for deer.

Great shooting Dave, I still have some platinum's in .45 if you want to try them on deer, even some in .50 also.
