Mountaineer & X7 @ 300 Yard

Snowed some last night; just had to get out, and look for tracks. Took them rifle with, and set up at 300 yard. Loaded both with 300g Deep Curl, 115g BH, crush rib sabot, W209 primer. Took 2 shot with the X7 then a shot with the Mountaineer. Aimed at the bottom target with the X7, and at the top target with the Mountaineer.

Was surprised to see the bullet from the Mountaineer strike the lower target. After a bit, it dawned on me that i had removed the cds dial from the scope on the Mountaineer, and replaced it with a moa dial so i could shoot it at 400 yard. Evidently i didn't install the cds dial back properly. So, set up at 200 yard, and 100 yard to adjust the scope on the Mountaineer. After many shots, and several adjustments; set up again at 300 yard. Aimed at the top target with the Mountaineer, and made 2 shots. Then loaded and shot the X7 at the bottom target.

Saw only 4 sets of deer tracks; no coyote tracks, no turkey tracks, and no lion tracks.

that is some good shooting. I never shot a muzzleloader that far.

That's great shooting for 300yds with either gun. With that particular load, it looks like that short lil' X7 shot a better group than the Mountaineer did.

My thoughts exactly.
Guess that proofs the idea about a shorter barrel not be a long range gun.

The target showing the first two shots from the X7, but now with the shot from the Mountaineer removed.

When measuring these photo on the monitor, the two shots from the sighted in Mountaineer appear to be about 4 1/2" apart. The three shots from the X7 appear to be about 5 1/3" group.

It was/is fun for me to be able to make a killing shot at 300 yard. Further, it was pleasing that the first two shots from the cold clean barrel of the X7 were killing shots. It was also pleasing that the last shot of the day which was from a cold dirty barrel made a group with the first two shots.

It seems to me the Mountaineer can also be relied upon to make a killing shot at 300 yard. The Mountaineer now needs shot at 300 yard, from a cold clean barrel.

Definitly proves you do not need the extra length of the barrel or the added lentgh of a bolt, to accomplish 300yd. shots....
