another try at an homemade range rod

a few years ago, I tried to make an homemade range rod, using an steel rod. came out pretty go, but it is steel.

I started to try it again this time with an prototype made with 6010 aluminum. my plans how I want to drill and tap right into the rod has failed, I have put 40sw cases on the ends (one end is done. used and screw and smoothed flush with the brass case. (going to solder the wholes)

I have an 72in stock of 6061 aluminum (thought I ordered 36in) that i am going to use for the final rod.

Sounds alright. You will have to post a picture of it when you get it done.

Let us know how she turns out....a few years back I bought a ram rod from wal-mark, it was solid aluminum and way to long, only one of the ends was threaded. I cut it to lenght after I put on a TC super Jag and sent it to work with my future son in law and he threaded the other end for me. It's a good sturdy one and I screwed in a TC T Handle on the other end.
I always wanted one made of Brass, but I have'nt found a piece of brass stock yet. I figured brass would be softer than aluminum and much easier on the barrel.

I made 2 at work before I retired. One aluminum, one brass.Drilled and tapped both ends in a lathe.Using the aluminum one.I put the brass up where it would not get lost.Haven't seen it since.

I have not been able to find the right dia brass in the right length. I have find them in 1ft sections. guess you could find someone to turn down one side and thread them then solder them.

little update. i just can't get anything to work on the ramrod. I have used 4 methods to drill right into the aluminum nothing. 3 ways to attach did not work. I just ordered premade tips from TOW.

I have cut my prototype so much it will work for an ramrod on one of my guns. good thing. I need to get two for an couple missed placed wooden ones.

Dont you hate that! I've put more things away for safe keeping only to find that they were really safe as I could not find them again:confused:
