Lets do the opposite now
For those of us who responded to Breechplug's post on the longest ML shot - What was your closest shot.
I'll start by saying that mine actually depends on where you're measuring from. If from the body it would be about 7 feet. If from the muzzle, more like 3 feet. That big old doe just kept coming and coming and coming. I finally had to shoot her before she became a bore obstruction! |
40 yards with my flintlock
|
LOL, definitely not that close! I shoot em before that :D
I'd say about 20yds is my closest. |
15-20 feet straight down - it was foggy and I could not see him until he was below my stand. I ruined part of his backstraps and loins on that one.

About seven from the tree I was ten feet up in, so maybe 12 feet. It was with a .50 caliber percussion cap rifle, roundball, 85 grains of Goex 2f. I shot her in the back of the head where it meets the neck. That animal dropped right where she stood.

10 feet with my old Black Knight.

Good One Bronco, I was thinking the same thing and going to post a thread about the same thing.
I like you have had a bunch of real colse shots. I hunt from the ground a-lot and have had many courious and unsuspecting deer come real close to me. I remember one close shot with my old CVA Staghorn Mag. I was standing next to a Big Oak Tree almost close to the one I had a Pic of not too long ago on the forum. Anway I was a stander on a drive and as soon as I got next to the tree here came 2 twin 5 Pointers right at me. As soon as they got next to the tree I was standing at they stopped about a foot from the tree. I slowly raised the MLer and did'nt even have to aim as the muzzle was just about a foot from the deer, I fired. What I remember most about this is this was the first time I had a MLer that would handle a Magnum Charge of 150 grs, at the shot the deer was thrown about 5 feet into the tree next to the one I was standing by, it got up and ran 150 yds through the woods and left NO Blood Trail even though it was shot through the heart, I followed the scuffed leaves in the woods to find the deer. The MLer was a CVA Stag Horn Mag with a 240gr XTP a 150gr's of Pyro Pellets and a Win W209 Primer, the scope was'nt needed. One other time and this was with a Bow, agian I was walking through the woods and saw a deer comming, I hugged a tree. I saw it was a Buck and drew back, as the buck passed I though he was going to knock the arrow off the rest as he went by, I shot.....he piled up 30yds away. I can go on and on as I have had way more shots from 0-15 yds then any other with bow and mler. Im more of a close shot than a long shot hunter as most of all my shots with a bow are 20yds and under and with a MLer are 50yds and under. (BP) |
The same 15 yds for me. Most of that was in elevation as I was on a rock overhang.
HA |
My biggest buck to date. About 10 yds.
|
My closest was about 20 feet with the BK92.
I had a bow shot from a blind at about 4 feet but I didnt take the shot as I was waiting for antlers! Stupid, I did not get a deer that year. The kids went hungry (well for lack of venison anyway. They had to eat cow instead!) |
My closest deer was an unmeasured 50 feet or so. We were walking toward each other on a well worn game trail. I saw the deer before it saw me, and was able to move my rifle from being slinged over my shoulder, to being cocked, aimed, and fired before the deer made an evasive move. The 300g XTP hit it straight on in the chest, and it rolled over, and was dead, just as i arrived after reloading.

10 yards with a muzzleloader.

About 9 feet, it was the last day of the season and I had not even seen a deer, was hunting in a fence row about 3 trees wide 3 deer came running from an other place and came right down the fence row while I was on the ground under my stand eating my dinner I seen them coming and rolled around behind the tree and they just kept coming right at my tree I shot my 54 Hawken when she turned to go around the tree [120 grains RS and PRB it went in behind her shoulder and when the smoke cleared there was two deer laying there the ball had gone through the chest of the doe and hit the 6 point behind her in the neck and dropped both on the spot.

OK, I was'nt going to brag but after reading all the post I guess Im going to.
My closest shot was actually -4 yds, I had a buck walking twords me while I was in my stand and I could'nt get a shot, so I let him walk by, then at 4 yds I took him out. (BP) |
I was ground hunting in a makeshift blind of limbs and leafs. I seen 4 doe come into the wood lot, I was hunting at a dead run. One was heading straight for me, I actually about jumped out because I thought she was going to run me over. She finally turned just a hair to pass on the left side of the blind, My barrel was already resting on a limb, I had propt up on the tree. As she was passing i pulled the trigger. Couldn't have been more than 3 ft. from me and maybe 6" from the barrel. Never had the chance to even shoulder the gun but, she was so close there was no way, I could miss.
Probably could have shot one closer about 6yrs. ago. I was sitting in a barn overlooking a field and had a yearling (by hisself) come from the side, I was not watching. He was passing me at about 4 ft. by the time i caught him in my vision. He looked straight at me and stoped, then started to walk away. He got about 20ft. and turned and came back, Walked right up to me and was sniffing me, his nose was about a foot from my chest. After about 10sec. ( seemed like 10 min.) he just kinds trotted off, out to about 10ft. and looked back and then began on his way. I just set frozen in that chair and I could count his eyelashes. It was by far the coolest hunting moment, I have had. I have never had one that close again and probably, never will. |
Probably about 10ft, the buck walked up the logging road where I was up a tree. Shot him with my TC renegade with a buffalo bullet.
|
20 yards with a muzzleloader. My closest was with a crossbow. I had a doe follow my trail right to my blind. I built a blind under a spruce tree, just from a few limbs. The doe followed my trail right up under the tree. Separated only by the trunk, I put the arrow centre of her chest, head on.
|
About 20 feet. I was in a ladder stand attached to a white oak tree. A spike was feeding around on acorns when he fed on around to my left side I shot him in the neck with a 58 caliber flintlock with a PBR pushed with 90gr. Of GOEX 2-f
|
Mine was an almost identical scenario as Cayugad's, but I was using a T/C Hawken .45 Flint with 70gr of 3f Black and a T/C Maxi-ball. The deer was about 10-12 feet from the muzzle....BPS
|
With a muzzy, about 25 yards from a treestand. 10 point buck, 185 grain Lehigh on top of 80 grains T7. After the shot, the trotted towards me, stopped right under my tree and fell over. With a bow, about 4 yards away (it was actually in the same treestand).
|
From my deer stand; 20 feet in the vertical and 3 feet in the horizontal. It was kinda' uncomfortable position to shoot from; heavy coat was bunching up around my shoulder. Pulled the trigger, then bang, then flop!
|
10 yards with muzzleloader, on the ground.
|
A lot of really close encounters. Some quite amusing. And something they we will probably never forget.
