What's Your Longest Shot With A MLer?
There seems to be a-lot of talk on here lately about shooting long distances. So let's here them...how far was your longest shot, Where did you hit the animal, what MLer did you use, Scope, Powder, Bullet/Sabot and Primer? What was the animal and how far did it go? Also if you have a goal of wanting to take a long shot what would the distance be?
Now Im not exact but this is close, My longest shot was around 185yds, I was using My CVA Accura V1 with a Leupold Ultimate Slam MLer Scope on 6 Power. I used 110gr's of Pyrodox RS Powder with a 240gr XTP Bullet and a MMP HPH-24 sabot and a Win W209 Primer. The animal was a Whitetail Buck Deer and he only went 27yds, the shot was a perfect heart shot and a complete pass through. Im just looking for a 200yd shot, I dont need anything further but if someday I can put togeather a long range shooter and I can put 3 shots out of 4 in a 3" group at 300yds I would'nt mind doing one that far, more practice. (BP) |
80-90 yards, open sights, T/C Renegade 54 caliber, 90 grains Pyrodex RS, and roundball. With the one shot I killed two deer. The ball passed through the first and broke the spine on the second one.

Mine was 125 yards on a whitetail doe with one of the Sinful Sisters (.50 GM-LRH barrel, Renegade stock, 4X ProDiamond scope).
The load was 95 grains GOEX FFFg under a 250 grain Deep Curl. The bullet clipped the rear of the right leg, center hit a rib going in, took out the top half of the heart and everything around it, center hit a rib going out, entered the inside center of the left front leg, blew the leg bone apart, and lodged in fragments under the skin of the off side shoulder. The deer traveled 40 yards after the shot (perhaps a tad less) and left no blood trail that I could detect. |
148yds with open sights out of my old Winchester X150 and 150gr loose Pyrodex RS, 245gr Powerbelt. That ol gun is still dropping deer and bear! Im lucky that i sold it to a good guy who keeps in touch now and then to let me know how well it is still serving him.

About 80 yds with open sights. When I first saw her at 40 yds, I could see she was crippled with a real bad limp. She dissapeared in the tall swamp grass before I could get a shot. When she reappeared she was about 70 yds, walking directly away and all I could see was her head. I settled my sights between her ears and touched her off. I didn't know if I hit her until I went to look for her. I found her spread eagle right where she was when I shot, with a bullet hole right between her ears. She had been hit with a bullet earlier during the regular firearms season and had a raging infection. The bones on one of her front legs were completely exposed in her shoulder area. The entire area was green and she had lost about half the hair on her body. I'm glad I took the shot as she had to be suffering horribly.

I shot a Turkey at 277 yards with a Nula.

Longest shot
My longest shot was,263 yards last year, the last day of Ohio's ML season. Using a 45 Knight DISC Extreme, shooting 100gr RS,Win 209, Knight 175 gr Red Hot, supplied tan sabot. Old Bushnell 3000 Elite scope. I held about 12 in over her back,(2 ears). Impact was a complete pass through heart lung shot, she dropped just in front of the 300 berm at the range. The only reason I took this shot was that she was standing in the the middle of our rifle range, just beyond the 250 target berm. We had been shooting our ML's the week before at the same range and had doped the drop on the 200, 250, 300, and 400 yd target dingers.

On a harvest my longest shot has been 186 yards on cow elk. Slightly uphill and broadside. 120 grains T7-2f, .458-300 gr. Nosler Partition in a MMP Orange Sabot.
Just shooting for fun with a ML - 250 yards @ the farm |

About 120 yd off my knee, through the heart, dropped her in her tracks.

Well to be quite honest, my longest shot was about 55 yds open sighted T/C Hawken Green Mtn LRH .50 cal. But although the shot wasn't far, the challenge was that the whitetail doe was on a flat out run left to right. After the shot she ran less than 40 yds and piled up after my 300 gr XTP ruptured her heart. Shot was probably more luck than skill. But I'll take it. Every other animal I shot was well within the 50 yd mark.

120 yard cow elk, open sight.
95 gr of BH 209 and a 350 FPB |
Well, i don't really know. When i made the longest shot, i had no range finder. It couldn't be paced, because it was on the other side of a semi-deep drainage. The gps say it was 230 yard. However, them gps are never 100% accurate.
The deer was sleeping, and never was able to get up. When i arrived at the deer, it was still alive, and when i moved it to better cut it's throat, i discovered it wasn't paralyzed. Opening the deer, revealed somehow, the bullet passed between the top of the lungs, and the bottom of the spine. The bullet didn't really hit anything. The deer seemed paralyzed, and i think it was because of the bullet passing near the spine. The bullet was the 270g Deep Curl. This year i carried a range finder, and hit a deer at a measured 173 yard. It was a bad shot that broke it's back. I was too shaky standing on my hind legs, and shooting off the tall bipod. |

I've had two stepped off at approximately 75-80y. Both were with my Optima Elite using 100gr of 777 pellets under 250gr SSTs with the low drag sabots. The first was off the rail of a tree stand while my rifle was scoped. Broadside, double lung, didn't run far. The second was the same setup but with open sights. I was sitting against the base of the biggest tree I could find to block the wind because when I washed my coat the night before it didn't get dry. The shot was off of a monopod. Same story. double lung short run.
Good thread and some great shots! rw |
180 yards with a original Knight Disc shooting 110grs T7 2F and a 375gr SSB.
|
You guy's need to get better watches. :p My longest is 15 yds with a ML'er and about 70 with a CF.
To the original poster. If my 4th shot was a long way away from the other 3, I wouldn't be taking that shot at that range. 25% chance of wounding a deer is not fair to the animal IMO. HA |
It was 100 yards for me (paced off after the shot).
Knight BK92 Leupold 1.75x6 VX3 set at 3x 100 grains of T7 Hornady .430 300 grain in MMP green sabot Whitetail doe top of heart and both lungs Left a 5 foot wide blood trail ran 40 yards (paced off) |
This year with my Knight Mountaineer and Leupold UltimateSlam, a doe at 237yds. and a buck a minute later at 185yds. using 110gr. BH209 and a Harvester .260gr. PT gold and CR sabot

Closer, is better with a muzzy... but my longest shot to date is 60 yards. 2010 I took a button buck, neck shot, 100gr Bh209 and a 250 TEZ.
|
Back in 1984 I made the longest shot I have ever made. I was shooting a .54 CVA Big Bore Mountain Rifle. It was a fat doe and the range was 80 yards. I was shooting a round ball with a poly-patch pushed by 120gr of GOEX 2-f

Cool Thread...
My farthest ML shot was this year... 101 paces CVA wolf, 100 gr pyro pellets and Hrnandy XTP, open sights. Dropped... Most of the deer I've shot though are under 40 yds... |
A little over 90yds. T/C Encore 110gr 777 250gr shockwave. Our Va farm all stand sites are set up for our bow hunting except one thats on our food plot. 8 pointer came out facing me in the opposite corner and as he stood I placed the SW in the base of his neck. Bang ...flop.....:fighting0007:

Long-range Muley
1 Attachment(s)
Took this Mule Deer at 236 yds. with a single shot to the neck (that was all I could see in the scope). Round entered his neck low, severed his jugular, and passed straight through his neck bone which paralyzed him before he bled out. I recovered the bullet piled up next to the hide Bullet - 250 grn. T/C shockwave yell. sabot & 150 grns T7 pellets & 209 primer.

Well, it wasn't a shot at game, but last year I took a shot at the standard target at 600 yards with a .58 T/C Renegade shooting a Maxi-Ball in front of 120 gr. Goex ffg, and a CCI 11 Mag Cap. Fired from prone over sandbags.
Missed the target by 13 feet. This is why I keep my hunting ranges to under 100 yards. |
White Model 98 Elite Hunter in .451 caliber. RWS #11 cap, 100 grains Pyrodex P, 426 grain home cast conical. 200 yards on a feeding doe. Shot was taken from one hillside to the next, laying angled on a slightly downward slope in the prone position. No wind. DOA
I had practiced at longer ranges up to 220 yards that summer and early fall with the intention of pulling off such a shot just to prove I could do it. ;) Because of the practice, I had complete confidence in the rifle and the holdover required for such a shot. I'll probably never try that again. |
Cow Elk, 120 yds, White Super Safari 504 NE 495 gr with 95 gr T7 ffg. DRT.
