Well I must be doing something wrong..........as usual.....I'll try again....the jag is tight so its not twisting....I was all over the place....had a few groupings in 22 range...I'll go get a long straight edge to make sure I am hitting center half way. And make a better 'Flag'...we'll geterdun! :) and Correctly.....If i try to take it completely out I am close to a full turn but not quite.....
JW And so others can see What Semi told me and is referring to.... ![]() Is stamped on the barrel of the .54 caliber but not on the 45. |
OK guys, I tried the tape to the ole shotgun cleaning rod. I can get appx. 27 inches of total travel in the barrel and can not get the rod to turn one half revolution during this travel. I start with the tape tag at 12 o'clock and when I get the rod all the way down the bore the tag is at about 5 o'clock. I have tried this several times and I am sure that the patches are not jumping the rifling. So I divided 5 by 12 and get about 42% of a circle in 27 inches. Divide 27 by .42 and I get about 64. If I did the math right, I either have a 60 or a 66 twist in this Investarm Hawken. Certainly not a 48 twist. What do you think?

I have an inline named Legacy Model made by Brolin Arms. Back when I bought it the rate of twist was of no importance to me and really doesn't matter now, but because of this thread I became curious as to what the rate of twist is so I checked it. It appears to have a 21 inch barrel with a 1 in 30 inch twist. the rod made one half turn in a 15 inch span. I don't even think I remember hearing of a 1 in 30 inch twist so maybe I did it wrong. Who knows though, the gun was made in China.

Years ago it was the gun I would let a buddy use since he did not have a muzzle loader. He took a couple of deer with it and I finally harvested a deer with it 3 or 4 years ago. I was using 83 grains fffg Goex and a 240 grain XTP with a black Harvester sabot. The distance was only about 25 yards and the doe dropped where she was shot. The gun has never made an official trip to the range, only some shooting to sight it in in a field many years ago. I plan to take it to the range and do some shooting from the bench this summer to see what it will really do. But the little shooting at paper I did with it seemed to show it liked sabots with bullets best.

I tried the quarter turn bit, but sometimes I would get close to 12 inches, other times I would get around 15 inches. It was tough to decide when the quarter turn was made. So I decided to go the length of the inside of the barrel to try to nail it down. But thanks, Semisane. I am not that sharp on the math so the quarter turn would have suited me better.

Okay I made a Gander Mountain Run - got be a nice new spinning handle cleaning rod and now I know with both guns they are 1:60
Quarter turn on both was real close to 15 inches and half turn was close to 30 inches. The rod I had must have been slipping even though I was real carefull pulling it out! I even improved as I added 180 degree flag with wings on the top and bottom, as that was easier to judge the turns on the gun as I pulled the rod out. Then to check I re-inserted making sure I came back to zero. JW |
