I wouldn't mess with the laminated mountaineer until, if and when it needs it.give one of the older .45 cals a bed job maybe the 1:20 flavor, if you really think it will improve accuracy that much!

My personal opinion only... but I think if you are looking for really long range shooting a 50 cal will provide much better platform with the options available... UNLESS you move to big heavy lead conicals... then as has been proven by Knight and White for 7 years running the 1-18 twist - 45 cal would be the weapon. It would be a long slow flight with plenty of arch but it would be the most likely to stay on course over a very long distance... |
Can't help with your decision, but glasbed really really helped the 50 extreme, and now i can't easily decide whether to use the 45 or the 50 in the late doe season.

Aren't they the same thing? Are you talking laminate? |

Problem is you can not get a heavy enough 40 cal bullet to shoot in a sabot from your 1-20 to over-ride all exterior forces that the bullet will go through on it's way to a long range target. The why at the National Championships they always shoot big lead. It takes very little cross-winds on a 40 cal sabotted bullet to move it left-right/up-down. And shooting across open lands for a very long distance you will/may encounter different wind patterns - temperatures along the way - that can all effect the flight of the bullet. Just some things to think about... |

None of mine have a pillar, just bedded from in front of the trigger to in front on the recoil lug. It keeps the action from wiggling in the stock. It takes a bit of sanding to get the barrel to float all the way as I like more clearance than most.
Sorry if this is a hijack but I think we're on topic. |
Josmund, be careful. If you putty up the fork, you will block the ramrod from fully seating in the stock.

Thanks for the replies. I think I made up my mind. The project begins tomorrow. I am going to bed the 45 disc 1:20 twist with the synthetic stock. I was going to do the laminate just because it looked so much nicer but after reading sabotloaders post I decided on the synthetic. I chose the fast twist so I could use heavy lead as well as sabots
