Ha ha, very funny. Its really funny because here in my area where we hunt there are a lot of strip mines, now abandon and wooded over. Just about every deer my friend has shot since I've known him has ran into and died in one of these pits. Now these are normally about 30 - 50 yds wide and can be anywhere from 20 - 100 ft deep (almost vertical walls) depending on where the coal vein ran out. Makes for a difficult recovery sometimes.

I shot a 8 point buck with a bow a few years back and was blood tracking it. I had only went about 20 yards, maybe a little more and came to a balsam three that was on the ground... the blood stopped on the one side, so I figured it jumped the downed balsam and kept going, but with all the blood it was loosing, I really didn't think it went far. Walked around that balsam tree and not a drop of blood. Sat there scratching my head wondering what the heck.. looked down and there was a deer leg sticking out from under that tree. It crawled under there and died.

You guys ever have grouse do that to you? I've shot them and went to pick them up and did a lot of searching until I found it. If they're not dead when they hit the ground, they have a habit of grabbing a bunch of leave with their feet and then flipping onto their back to die. Basically covering them up. And they are really hard to find.

Had one die inside a tangle of multiflora rose. Not a pleasant task to retrieve.
