Mountaineer does the job!!

Finally got to shoot the Mountaineer at something!! Our muzzy season opened yesterday and I got lucky and connected on this main frame 8 with a 2 inch drop tine, yes I said drop instead of kicker, because it is my first with a drop!:cool2: Any rate, it was about 5 pm last night and I was hunting a winter wheat field and it filled up with deer. I had this buck and a couple others in it. I was using my Mountaineer with a Vortex Viper HS 2.5x10x44 scope, a 300 gr Lehigh and 120gr of BH 209. The deer was staying about 225 to 250 yards out, I felt that I could make this shot so I tried. To make a long story short, I must have shot right under him because I missed!! Not good!! Deer went everywhere for there was 6 does in it along with 3 bucks. So I quickly started to reload, as I was doing this, they settled down as well in the field, not knowing what went on. Well I look up and don't see the deer that I'm after, I get reloaded and there he is this time at about 150 yards, he actually got a lot closer and I know that I can make this shot with no problem. I put it on him again and this time he wasn't so lucky!!:happy0001: He went about 50 yards and went down in a grown up crp/brial field. But I could see him. I again reloaded and started that way for it was getting dark. As I was walking I could hear something like the deer was coughing, great I thought, he is filling up with blood, so I quickly went into the grown up field and walked right up to him. He was down but his head was bobbing, so I put another one in him not taking any chances. He is not a bad little deer, I know I'm tickled with him and really love my Mountaineer!!! I will say this, I didn't get great blood with the Lehigh this time, but what it done on the inside of this deer was tremendous, I didn't have to put the second into him but was just very cautions. It done the job on the inside and I guess that is what really counts.

What a great buck!!! Very nice.

Where did you hit the second time? Did you get a pass through, because in the photo I did not see it? That was a heck of a shot you made. That 150 is about as far as I would want to try. I know these rifles can shoot farther, I am just saying that would be my limit. Although watching something like that out at 200 yards would be pure torture.

First off, very nice late season buck!!!! Congrats!!!

I guess, I will be the one. I see everyone give it to SST's for no blood, and then finding the deer 50-60 yards away. Which it seems happened in this instance as well.

Where did you connect on the first shot? Was you high (the shot, not you)? You done a very good job cleaning the deer up but, it looks like a hole maybe right behind the front shoulder about 6-8" up, Is this the second shot?

I am curious to these answers as I am thinking of moving to a premium bullet for next year but, I have had great terminal results with the SST's and PT golds. It seems if you had not seen the buck go down and darkness set in, you may have had a hard time finding it.

I know the end result was the bullet done its job and the buck died but, i am one that says any bullet will do that, even penciling thru puts a hole thru whatever your shooting. Hopefully it is the heart and lungs and they will not go far.

Congratulations on your harvest. That buck looks like it has a pretty good size body on it for sure. Should feel the freezer for ya. As far as the bullet, 50 yards and no blood is not what I would want. I would assume you shot it high then I would understand. Can't wait to hear what happened on your first shot. Either way the job was done. :)

Congrats on the buck and thanks for a good write-up.

Same here, thats why I asked. That happens with all bullets including the SST that everyone likes to talk about.
