New Mountaineer @ the Farm
 

I have had this new gun for awhile but just could not make time to get out and shoot it. I set it up and bore sighted it right after I got it, but hunting season was on and getting tin the way. Elk season ended yesterday and the sun was out this morning so even though it was 32 and the wind was blowing well - It was time....

Loaded everything up and headed to the farm for the first shots fired from this gun. Hunter had moved his pickup out of the shed so I was able to set up in the front and get sheltered from the wind a bit, the target 'not so much'...

I ended up shooting several shots today but the first three were the most important to me. After those 3 - I believe I might have a shooter.

Remember I had bore sighted a few weeks ago at the house so I set the target out at 50 yards.



As you can see this gun is set up different than a normal Mountaineer - I am not fond of wood stocks in this country and my style of hunting so I requested the composite stock. I was a bit surprised that I was able to swap stocks, but Knight told me that in 2012 the composite stock would be an option for the new Mountaineer. Also Knight has a deal with Leupold to place scopes on new rifles so the U-slam was installed.
So for my first brief outing with this new gun... It worked - further testing will occur....

That is some real good shooting there Sabotloader. It seems that you have a real shooter. Future reports should be very interesting.

I dont remember reading that you had bought a new Knight. I did notice you selling a few.... How was your guns quality? I have read a few posts on here with breechplug area problems. I also wondered why no 52cal. Do I recall you saying on past posts that the 52 was a better caliber..... Well one thing that gun is a shooter, very nice looking set up.

That is why I was thinning out a bit to raise some cash... From what I can see with what i got... it is great - the quality and the shooting. I will no a lot more in the month - month and 1/2...

I can not speak for others but there is nothing wrong with mine. I wrapped it in tape made sure it was started correctly in the threads and turned it home...

I acutally thought about the 52 but I already have a 52 Exteme that shoots lights out and I could not sell it... my heart would not let me. The really good thing about the 52 is the 1-26 twist when shooting long heavy bullets. It is my dedicated elk gun and if I were hunting hogs - it would be a natural.

I do not remember saying it was a better caliber... it is pretty darn good but the 50 is still far more versitile. Although since Lehigh created the .458-220 grain bullet - it did get some addition versitility and the twist rate makes it an interesting caliber. At this point I am not into shooting the bigger 475 cal bullets but it is an option... now if I lived in Canada or Alaska - that might be something to think about.

Time will tell... but I am looking forward to working it out...

That rifle shoots good, and so do you. My Mountaineer will have a wood stock.

Looks like a shooter to me and it's great to know they will offer the synthetic stocks next year(wise decision). does that include the standard style and not just the thumb hole?

Ray, it should be the entire line of stocks that you see on the DISC Extremes this year. So yes, the straight normal stock should also be available.

Today it (the rifle) did everthing I wanted it to do - but need to do a lot more shooting with it. Just gotta find time, between hunting and following two my grandaughters playing AAU basketball, takes a lot of time...
