In many cases conical bullets may work fine. However, results vary depending on the many factors so we cannot recommend conical bullets. However, many shooters have reported good results with Hornady FPB and Thor bullets.

Its not recommened because of not getting a tight seal for ignition.
Maybe you will or want depends on the conical fit. You could try a duplex load

I like Triple Seven when I shoot conical bullets. And I like the 2f better then the 3f. But that is just my White Rifles choice. I think that Knight should shoot conicals well. Save the BlackHorn for the sabots. Just have fun. Getting nice and cold, so its time to shoot.

It does a really excellent job with 90 grains and the 350 gr FPB for me.

I suspect the FPBs work well in some rifles due to the cupped, oversized base allowing for a tighter seal than most conicals. Same would apply to the Thors.

Powerbelts, Thors all shoot excellent with BH209 for me.

Jon Busta over at GBO uses BH209 all the time with conicals/wads in several rifles.i would have no problem using BH209 behind a .460 conical and a shot card or wad with a 70or 75 gr charge.

You might find that lower charge with the heavier bullet could produce some very good velocitys because of the progressive burn of the powder we all might find that if we lower our charges and use tighter fitting bullet ,sabot combos if could save some money on powder in the long run cause powder is usually the most exp part of the equation

I shoot BH with 460g Bullshops fairly regularly. I won't tell anyone else to do it because of what Western says. But I never shoot more than 80 grains. I've never had an issue with needing a tight seal with BH. I shoot the .504s out of a .503 without any issues whatsoever.

mack166 12-10-2011 07:25 AM

Just saying a tighter fit might take advantage of the progressive burn rate a little better didn't have anything to do with ignition Just burning the powder charge more complete and not just throwing partial burnt charge out of the barrel

I would definitely use a shot card or wad when using Bh209 and a conical since it burns hot and may very well melt the rear portion of the bullet.1000 shot cards from Track the wolf are $7.50.i would gladly send you some, but the ones i have are .50 cal.post up your results.i would use BH in the wolverine, if it wasn't a open breech rifle.

I would certainly second what Ray has posted... I know what T7-3f will do without a wad and BH is physically builds more heat than does T7.

And I think it has already been mentioned but because of BH's progressive burning capabilities and the weight of the projectile you are proposing - reducing the powder weight is the prudent thing to do.

Do you have a chrono?
