Bh 209?

I have been shooting 3F 777 in my TC Omega for a few years now and have been pleased with the results. I will be needing to buy some new powder soon and am considering the switch to BH 209. I understand cleanup is accomplished with Hoppes #9? Any load suggestions for the Omega? Does it require swabbing between shots? Primer suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You may want to try a load of 250g Deep Curl, 100g BH209, crush rib sabot, and W209 primer.

There is no need to swab between shots, but you do need to remove the carbon from the flame channel of the breech plug. This you can do with a 1/8" drill. I have old worn chucks here, and i put the drill in a chuck and turn it by hand. If you allow the carbon to build, you may need to start the carbon removal with smaller drills, and finish with the 1/8". Doing this every 10 shot or so, keeps it simple.

Any solvent including Hoppes, will work when using BH. Birchwood Casey bore scrubber is what i have been using as of late.

So is the BH209 as good as everyone claims...in your opinion?

Its the only powder I'll ever shoot. Try 110gr of BH209, Winchester 209 primer and a .452/250 0r 300gr. Deep Curl bullet in a Harvester Short Black sabot. You may also try a 250gr. shockwave in the same sabot. This load with the shockwave bullet will shoot one inch groups if I do my part. I've gone to the 300 gr. Deep Curl this year for better penetration and expansion. Good luck and let us know how you like it.

Mine likes 110gr. with just about any .451-.452 bullet and a harvester crush rib (I have a very tight bore) Lite with a federal 209A primer.

If you try the BH209, you will never look back.

Clean the oil out of the barrel before the first shot shot several primers and wipe the barrel with a dry patch. Then do not clean or wipe any more until finished shooting BH is more accurate this way. Each gun is different because of barrel whip so I recommend starting at 90 grains and working up 10 grains at a time to 120 gr then use the most accurate load.

birchwood casey 2 in 1 bore scrubber is some awesome stuff.

With BH209 what i do is run 2 or 3 snug fitting DRY patches down the bore first to mop away loose fouling, follow up with a patch dampened with bore scrubber and work that up and down the bore, let it sit a while and then follow up with a bore brush and scrub. Let it sit and then dry patch the dirty stuff out and follow up with a clean patch and if it comes out clean, dry patches. Its a very easy powder to clean out of your bore.

I've never used it, and honestly don't know much about it. I'm a pyrodex & #11 guy for the past 20+yrs.

What's the big deal and/or pros and cons of BH209? I'm just curious, as I really am ignorant of the new stuff out today. Thanks

Not a user, but have followed it's rise.

Pros:

1. No Swabbing between shots
2. Little fouling, except flash channel
3. Cleans up like smokeless Nitro~ based powders
4. More powerfull
5. Did I mention no swabbing between shots
6. Less smoke/smell

Cons

1. Cost
2. Progressive burning, so seating is more critical
3. Looks funny
4. Has to be used in 209 action with enclosed breech

Looks funny is a con? It should be on the Pro side as each granule is the same size and consistent, unlike other powders.
