Early Season Buck

Here is an early season buck I shot with a 45 caliber flint rifle I built . He is by no means a trophy but ha sure looks good in the freezer. I was shooting a patched round ball pushed by a little 50gr. load of GOEX 3-f. I am hoping to connect with another one this season.

That antler in your right hand has some nice character to it. And congrats on the kill.

very nice. A fine buck the way I see it. Out of curiosity.. 50 grains and a .45 caliber ball.. how far was the buck from you when you shot? Did you get a pass through? How far did the deer run? What was the wound damage from that combination? Good luck on the next one. Nice shooting.

Well done! I guess that says a little something for 50 grain loads.

Cayugad, It was a 25 yard shot which is my average distance in these Georgia swamps. The ball struck between the lower part of the neck and the left front shoulder. He dropped in his tracks, kicked a couple of times and that was it. There was not an exit wound so the deer absorbed every bit of energy the little ball had to offer. In the areas I hunt a 60 yard shot is a long shot. I normally hunt with a 58 flintlock but I had built this rifle to shoot our monthly competition shoots. I just hate to have a rifle on my rack that I haven't shot a deer with. I don't load heavy charges because I don't need them. This is deer # 24 with flintlock.
