Hunting snacks

I normally take granola bars, an apple or two, some jerky, and Gatorade. Just wondering what the rest of you take. Do you worry about the scent?, or how loud the packaging is? I also get pretty paranoid about how much I drink because I don't wanna have nature call.

TNHagies 11-20-2011 05:13 AM

I enjoy my time in the woods. I don't worry about scent. I can think of 2 deer right of the top of my head I killed in the middle of eating a can of sardines.

Don't stress yourself on being scent free. It's not possible and not worth it.

dirt1008 11-20-2011 05:14 AM

Sardines! Definately not scent free. That eases my mind a little bit.

Muley Hunter 11-20-2011 07:55 AM

I take protein bars, trail mix, and lots of water. At the altitude I hunt it's easy to get dehydrated.

Taking a wizz is no problem. I don't sit in one spot.

ronlaughlin 11-20-2011 07:58 AM

Granola bar. Some times jerky. Sometimes trail mix.

MountainDevil54 11-20-2011 08:48 AM

trail mix, granola bar, candy, jerky if we have it.

nchawkeye 11-20-2011 09:03 AM

I'm on a low carb diet so I mix raw walnuts, pecans and almonds and have them in a zip lock bag...I also carry jerky, 2 bottles of water and sometimes beeny weeneys and a pack of nabs...Nothing wrong with tinkling in the woods, best place to do it is on a fresh scrape...

Muley Hunter 11-20-2011 09:18 AM

A fire hose can't tinkle. :p

zakjak711 11-20-2011 11:18 AM

Granola bar, banana or apple--keep it simple.

Mr.Flintlock 11-20-2011 12:57 PM

I take a peanut butter n jelly sandwich and a thermos of coffee . I don't know how many times I have had to set my coffee down to shoot a deer.

cayugad 11-20-2011 02:41 PM

When I was younger I was notorious for my food pack. I'd have a huge thermos of hot coffee, three or four salami sandwiches, a couple apples, candy bars, peanuts, I mean I used to go out and feast. Now with an ever growing waste line, and other health problems, its a thermos of coffee, canteen of cold water, an apple, and a pack of whole wheat crackers. Candy is a no no, but I still carry a few pieces of hard candy in my day pack. I avoid other foods as well. But I sure miss my food.

HEAD0001 11-20-2011 03:08 PM

My mother always makes us a couple of big batches of fresh pepperoni rolls. She is getting pretty old now, but she brought some pepperoni rolls up this afternoon. That and some homemade Pumpkin Rolls. Tom.

Muley Hunter 11-20-2011 03:46 PM

Some of you have misunderstood the question.

It wasn't.........What do you bring on a picnic? :poke:

I know a woman who had a fire built and was frying bacon when she shot her buck.

Did you marry her?? Tom.

Breechplug 11-20-2011 06:32 PM

I take Sandwiches, Coffee, Granola Bars and some time Jerky. Now SCENT does'nt bother Me as any Deer Up Wind of me Would'nt Smell Me if I was Cooking Venesion Chops on a Grill, and a Deer Down Wind of Me is going to Smell Me No matter how Scent Free I am. If you have to PEE, PEE......I've Pee'd in more Deer Scrapes than I could count and have had em Tear them up, our Pee wont spook a Deer. Do I worry about opening that Granola Bar from that Crunchy Packing, Nope, the Squirrels and other sounds in the Woods make as much Noise, but I do make sure I keep the sound of opening it to a minimum.
I often have a Smoke in the woods too, My Buddy always Razz Me and say the Deer are going to Smell it, I get More Deer than they do on any given year, people Use Woodstoves where We Hunt, , by the time a Down Wind Deer Smells the Smoke, it's usually too Late by then anyway for Him.
Now I was'nt gonna Mention this one as you did'nt Mention it but You could also Be Dressed in anything You want in your Treestand, Jeans, a Business Suit and still take a Deer, they dont see You Unless You MOVE. Also you could Bow Hunt in a Blaze Orange Suit and still take a Deer, Camo only makes Us Look Good, it's Over Priced and Way Over Rated. Do I wear it, Yep, but it has Never Helped Me tale a Deer that I had My sights on.
I've also had Thousands of Turkeys walk By Me while I was on the Ground Deer Hunting that Never saw Me while I was Dressed in Full Blaze Orange Mossy Oak Camo.
The Wind Saves Deers Lives and so does Your Movement, that's it......Period.

I read your post over and over trying to figure out what you mean. I failed. Please explain?

sqezer 11-20-2011 07:22 PM

I never had a problem taking a wizz, cover it up with dirt or snow and your good to go.

Muley Hunter 11-20-2011 07:27 PM

Oh, you meant to say bold print. I was thinking of the bolt of a gun, and it made no sense, or anything else to do with a bolt.

What I meant was someone in a stand wouldn't want to take a wizz near their stand. Someone mentioned not drinking so they wouldn't have to.

It's not a problem for me, because I keep moving.

btw You couldn't cover it up enough for a deer not to smell it. An elk would be even harder.

sqezer 11-20-2011 07:37 PM

What I do when Im in a blind I just keep an empty fabric jug with me, when it full I carry it out with me.

Muley Hunter 11-20-2011 07:45 PM

I did that when I was truck driving for a living.

Pepperoni rolls sounds great! My wife makes a pretty mean pumpkin roll and I've really been trying to cut back.

Muley Hunter 11-20-2011 08:05 PM

I'm getting hungry.

Deer dont accociate Humane Pee with a Human, it's just PEE. PEE somewhere near your Stand some time and see what the Deer do when they come in and if they find it, they'll mabey smell it, if not they'll just keep going. If they take off at 900 Milions Miles and Hour you better go in and have your Pee checked out.
In all seriousness Human Pee wont spook Deer, make a Mock Scrape, Pee in it and I bet a Buck will come in and Tear it Up.

Muley Hunter 11-20-2011 08:11 PM

I know that's not true of bears or coyotes. I assumed after all these years that it applied to all animals.

If our pee doesn't smell like a human. Why are we worried about our scent at all? Which of course we have to.

Muley Hunter 11-20-2011 08:19 PM

In a way you may be right depending on the experience of the deer and how old your pee is. This was a good response from another forum that makes sense.

got that question over on the deer forum on the Christian Outdoor Fellowship of America (COFA, of which I am co-founder).

Here was my answer:

Again, as a person who has either done a lot af personal research on whitetails and elk, or who has read a lot of research papers on those animals, let me set it straight.

Urine is different in different species, due to the chemicals found in what they eat. Thus, those animals (such as predators and humans) that eat meat, have a lot more protein in their urine, than those animals that are primarily vegetarion ("grazers" like elk, "browsers" like whitetails).

It has been found that a deer's sense of smell is about 1000 times better than that of a human.

Urine breaks down within hours into ammonia and other substances, due to bacterial action and being exposed to air.

Part of the answer to the question lies in the amount of scent (human urine) left behind, and how long it has been there, the less urine left, and the longer it has been there, the less it smells like human urine, and the more it smells like ammonia (which is non-threatening).

So - deer and elk can tell the difference between the urine of something that has recently eaten meat, and somehting that has not eaten meat.

Deer use their eyes ther ears and their nose to detect danger. But, unlike the other tow senses, when a deer smells danger - the response goes directly to a part of the brain that often causes an immediate respone- rather than a response to further investigate - so that it can verify that what it sees, hears or smells is dangerous.

The question then arises - Does high protein urine alarm deer and elk?

The answer to that lies in the fact that deer and elk routinely come across urine of predators, thus it may cause them to become "aware" of the fact that a meat eater was in the area. But, it may not cause them to become alarmed, if no other predator-related scents (such as dander, perspiration oils and odors, feces, or breath odors) are associated are detected.

In a study of how whitetails react to buck urine, doe urine, pre-estrus urine, estrus urine, post estrus urine and human urine, the most positive responses were to human urine. I suspect this was a "curiosity" response.

If a deer needs to be aware of everything in its home range - in order to survive - then it has to learn about everything in that home range, which means it probably investigates "new" or "unfamiliar" things (like human scents) - in order to learn. And - as long as there is not a sight or sound to further alarm the deer - it may not spook.

I have always heard this but never experienced it until 2 weeks ago. I relieved myself at the base of a tree about 6 feet from my stand. A small buck walked up and stood beside that tree and in fact was probably standing in urine about 20 mins after I relieved myself. He could have cared less. Gone is my fear of urine in the woods now.

Palehorse 11-21-2011 07:44 AM

Braunschweiger on Rosemary Triscuit with a nice Brown Ale or Winter Lager.

7.62NATO 11-21-2011 08:01 AM

I eat 2 hardboiled eggs and a banana in the morning before I hunt, and open two CLIF bars and wrap them inside a handkerchief. The two CLIF bars are all I need for an all day hunt, even if on the move the whole day. Sometimes I only eat one. I just don't get hungry when hunting for some reason, and this boy can really eat. Never had to take a dump in the woods either, and I almost always hunt all day. My body just "knows" what I'm doing and adjusts accordingly, except for the pee. If I am still hunting all day, I bring a quart of water and drink most of it 'cause it's easier to pee at most any time. If I am stand hunting I drink very little.

Muley Hunter 11-21-2011 08:14 AM

I eat, crap, and pee for the whole hunt.

I've been known to blow my nose too.

lemoyne 11-21-2011 08:22 AM

I find a low hanging branch pee under it and put a drop of doe scent on it when I am done, usually close to one of my stands often when the time of year is right the bucks will make scrapes there.

I don't see any reason to turn a hunt into an unnecessary deprivation. I like to wrap a nice oyster po`boy in some aluminum foil, and pack along a Michelob Amber Bock.

Ya` see guys. Things are different in the South. :s2:

Palehorse 11-21-2011 07:12 PM

Crab or Lobster on a roll with amber, now we are talkin', thanks for the pointer Semi' :D
