MD, good to hear from you.......yea I also use Birchwood Casey along with there Gun Oil, and Montana Bore Conditioner and there Gun Oil, Windex Patches, TC's No13 Bore Cleaner and Yes of Cource CVA's No. T-17 Foaming Bore Cleaner, nothing will get Me a Clean Patch after a Good Cleaning. I also use a Brass Brush and a Synthetic Brush to Scrub with.

boy that is interesting. My CVA Hawken does that. It doesn't rust mind you but has gray streaks on the patch after cleaning.

Rust needs some loving too. Let it have it's way now an then.

No MD have never tried it, but have heard some giid things about it, I'll get some and see how it works.

I had that same problem not too long ago with a traditions Deerhunter barrel. It is kit gun. I freaked out and soaked the barrel for 24 hours in Evaporust. It took care of the problem but took care of my bluing job also. I think I over reacted. I have yet to re-blue the barrel. It looks good in the white though. If it happens again I think I'll try just swabbing the bore with Evaporust.

I have the same thing now with my Knight Revolution. It never did that before a couple weeks ago. I took it to the range on a Saturday morning, put 4 rounds through it and swabbed after each round. Then loaded it and hunted that evening. I didn't thoroughly clean the gun until Monday evening and it wouldn't stop turning the patch brown. I looked down the barrel and sure enough there are some spots in it. I had no idea BP would corrode it that quickly. Thankfully my wife's Encore is stainless. No more blued blackpowder rifles for me.

So, once you get rust, how big of a problem is it? Will JB bore paste clean it out?

It is the same way with my blued Omega. the only, ONLY thing that gets the patches 100% clean is Blue Wonder after two or three 30-60 min soaking sessions. But I only need to get my ML that clean every 3rd or 4th cleaning, and never during the season.

FWIW, I'm with you on blued barrels. I will never buy another ML with a blued barrel again.

Edit - Also, I use the Otis cleaning system. You can only get a patch so tight on a cleaning jag. The Otis system allows you to get the patch as tight as can possibly be (i.e. as long as you have the strength to pull the patch thru).

Never have rust problems with blued barrels. I have a Winchester 94 that my dad gave me in the 50's. Barrel is good as new.

I've had a Wolf and a Omega recently with blued barrels. No rust.

I do use Ballistol though. Good stuff.

Some years back there was quite a discussion about that, a few people swabbed with Evapo Rust and got rid of it but it did not help some of us we finally came to a conclusion that it was a chemical reaction between two of the items we were using in the bore.

I have to agree with you on this one Lee, it has to be a Chemical Reaction of some sort. The Barrel is shiny clean inside with no evidence of Rust, it looks beautiful, but the dang Barrel just wont put out a Clean Patch. The patch just has a few light colored brown streaks on it where the rifling comes in contac with it, but no matter how hard you clean it or how many patches you run through it, they still come out with the light brown color on them.
Im not gonna worry about it as there's no eveidence of rusting in the Barrel, it's just I like to get things Clean. My SS Barrels clean up 10 times faster than a Blued Steel Barrel and all the Patches from the SS Barrels come out White after a Cleaning.
Oh and Semi if you read this I did try the Gum-Out Carbuerator Cleaner on the Barrel and still got the Brown Patches.
