TC Shockwaves vs. XTPs
 

I'm thinking of trying the TC Shockwaves & XPTs in my Knight DISC .50 cal w/ 100 gr. Pyrodex pellets. Anyone used either of them and what are your thoughts?

Both good bullets you need to shoot them and see how they group in your rifle.
The Shockwave bullets are made by Hornady as well, They are called SST bullets here is a link showing how well they work from a forum member

For many years i've used the 250 grain Shockwaves and the 240 grain .430 XTP in different guns. There is little difference in the effectiveness of these bullets: Put either where it is supposed to go and it will do a good job. For longer shots i prefer the Shockwaves.

Those two bullets have worked very well for me; taking about 35-40 whitetailed deer and more wild hogs than i can count.

Oh by the way some feel the XTP is a better bullet for deer sized game :)

SWs come in 250 and 300 gr and the XTPs (at least the .429") come in 240 and 300 gr. For deer the XTP would get the nod from me. But for deeper penetratin as some members suggested, the SW would be better.
You can also try a soft point bullet like the Sierra .4514" in 300 gr. But that may be too much bullet for deer.

Hmm...the SST and XTP are my 2 main hunting bullets, though I tend to opt for the SST.

A Knight Disc shooting two pyrodex pellets with a 300 grain Hornady .452 XTP with a MMP HPH-24. This was yesterday. I would hate to be the animal being shot at with that load. And I am sure there are some of the ballistics experts in here that could even give me some numbers on velocity, etc...

Been using the 240 grain XTP's in my TC Omega since I bought it. These bullets do a lot of damage on deer.

I used 250 gr XTP for years then switched to the Shock Waves. I use the yellow tip for practice and the Blue tip for hunting.
My judgement of effectively :
The XTP at close range on broadside shots with a powder load of 100 grains or less they are very effective, at long range or on long angle shots not so effective, they lose a lot of velocity and foot pounds of energy at long range and they shed the jacket and sometimes break up so long angle shots are questionable.
For larger game or long angles or long distance there are better bullets.
The yellow tip Shock Wave retains it velocity and energy much better but is very similar otherwise.
The Blue tip or bonded Shock Wave retains the same velocity and energy as the yellow tip but is much tougher it penetrates well enough for bigger game and holds together like the Deep Curl.I use the yellow for practice and the blue tip for hunting.
A picture is some times better than words. This is the last deer I shot with the blue tip, I was waiting for an other buck as I had gotten one with a bow but she had a broken leg and I felt I needed to do something about that. We only get 3 tags in my zone where my hunting property is this year and I really did not want to use one this way.
The picture is the inside of the rib cage on the side the bullet exited. I would not shoot them in the meat with this bullet. Would you believe she only went a couple of steps.

Going to use 240 gr XTP mags (.452) for the first time this weekend in my Omega. Used Shockwaves in past and had great results. I ran out of Shockwave and had plenty of XTPs, and they shoot just as good, so I am trying them this season in IL.

The 250 XTP in my son's TC Encore has taken 6 for 6 with ALL DRT's.
Shots are 110gr's 777 loose and 110 gr's BH 209 with distance of 60-120 yds.
Not that we needed it, but all were pass thru's.
Terminal velocity plus with this bullet.
Prior to this we used the TC Shockwave/SST,but couldn't get pass thru's!
As a result, had to trail deer with little to no blood--Ended up with deer not recovered.

I use nothing but the 240gr XTP, I have never lost a Deer that has been shot with one, but I also like the groups that they shoot out of My ACCURA V1, on a good day I'll put a 1 1/2" 5 shot group at 150 yds with them and even better at 100.
Now My Buddy shoots the SST's out of His TC Triumph, I have no clue why he has'nt killed a Deer yet with them, we get a few drops of Blood and No Deer, at the range He shoots great groups with them but in the Moment He can put it togeather.
Again, shoot what puts the Best Groups out of Your ML, and a well placed Bullet no matter what it is will get the job done. Sure there's some that do a Faster Better Job and that's what we want but if you hit em where your suppos-to then most should do the Job.

250gr shockwaves in my 3 .50 cals plus 90 grain of loose powder = dead deer200gr shockwave in my .45 cal plus 90grain loose powder = dead deerI am shooting the bonded ones and don't like them as much as the other, but couldn't find any of the non bonded ones ones last yr, and then got more of the bonded in my stocking. The bonded will drop the deer no issue, but the bonded seem to zip through deer and leave a small exit hole.

That's what Im thinking about My Buddy and His Shots on Deer with them. He's a Good Shot but the SST's He's using dont do much Damage and seem to Pass right through. We Hunt in Thick Hilly ravine area and if you dont find your Deer with in a 100yds or so your in Trouble as they can go into the Thckest stuff Imagineable or go down one Ravine and over another in a matter of seconds. Im gonna try My Best to get Him to try a different Bullett. Were good Trackers but when we have to Track a Deer into stuff that will hold you up if you Die in there then I hope you guy's know what were up against. Most times we have to leave our Guns and Crawl into this stuff with Pruning Shears just to get through it, all we also make sure we have Walkie Talkies so we dint get lost in there or have to Yell to another Friend just so they can tell us where we are.

Either are good bullets. Keep in mind there are several different types of Shockwaves and XTP's as several have noticed. I only have personal experience with the following:

1. .430 240 grain XTP- my hunting buddy has used these for years, and they are
deadly on deer. Some have been pass-thrus, some have stayed in the deer, but in
general I have always been impressed with them. He uses 80 - 90 grains T7.

2. .452 250 grain XTP- another hunting buddy uses these. Similar performance to
#1, the only difference is maybe less pass-thrus with this bullet, though it's hard
to say for sure.

3. 200 grain Shockwave- I've taken 3 deer with these. They penetrate very well and shoot flat. All were pass-thrus. Expansion has been good, though not
spectacular. I used 80 grains T7 on 2 deer, and 100 grains T7 on 1. I like these bullets for long range shooting in more open territory. If I was hunting in a
swamp or very brushy area, I would use a different bullet.

I have no personal experience with the 250 or 300 grain Shockwaves. There is also a 300 grain XTP and a .40 cal 200 grain XTP which I used to use and did a good job.
