Maybe a little softer lead. You never see a pure lead ball shatter. No matter how hard you push it.

I think the Platinum PB is the only one that acts like it should. A big hollow point with brittle lead doesn't work. The Platinum has a small hollow point and a harder coating to protect the lead.

Here's one review/post for someone who uses the same bullet i'm using for elk.

The Platinum 338gr, is the most accurate, hard hitting bullet for Bear and Elk I have ever shot. They shot 1/2" groups at 100yds. with open sights in My Thompson center Encore. I have killed several Elk and Bears with this bullet. Drops them in their tracks every time with a well placed shot. A little pricey for 15 rounds, but worth the price for what they do.

Not much info there. Just because the bullet is accurate. Doesn't mean the shot was.

A 30-06 is accurate. Does that mean every time a 30-06 is fired. An animal is harvested?

Nope, not much information, as I said I couldn't verify that it was a well placed shot. But we just can't assume every time we read a report of a PB failing on game in the field that it is shooter error. I have personally read of a LOT of PB failures on game in the field. You may have 50 negative reports and 50 good reports but I want a bullet that has almost very few negative reports. May not find 1 bullet that never gets any negativity but PB just gets too much for me to even try them in the first place.

That's why i'm going with the Platinum. It seems to more be positive, and the negative is animals that are killed, but didn't get a pass through. Even good bullets don't always pass through.

I have a gut feeling that the 338gr Platinum will take an elk for me, and knock a deer into next week. ;)

Speaking of deer Muley, How are the doe herds up there during muzzleloading season? My dad has a doe preference point so i figured why the heck not.

If you mean unit 55? It's buck only and takes 4 points.

I thought of that too, but I don't have the points.

MountainDevil54 11-14-2011 05:20 PM

oh wow no doe tags? Pssh! Like unit 85 then. Oh well, save it for another year lol.

Muley Hunter 11-14-2011 05:29 PM

The unit I live in is no does too. Except for private land, because does are out of control.

If that makes any sense? I guess it does to the DOW.
