Next year i'll be shooting a 250gr Thor and 100gr of BH 209 for elk. I'm confident it will be effective to 200yds, but will probably keep my limit at 150yds.

You certainly don't need 150gr for deer.

I sure am having a hard time believing that a 2 pellet load would have greater velocity than a 150 grain load of loose powder. In my shooting a 2 pellet load of 777 was the same as 85 grains of 777 2f or 100 grains of pyrodex RS.

Edit: I see this information you posted came from one of Randy Wakeman's articles. Best take it with a little salt.

this weekend

i'll have my white mountian with 80 pyrodex rs and a 300xtpmag in a crushrib sabot...I feel good about it :)

I took my Triumph out to see if it was still on after sitting unused since May. First shot 60 yards, hit dead center of a 3" dot with 2 pellets as recommended. Second sot 110 yards,3" low and right. I caused that I think, still 2 pellets. Third shot 150 yards, 2" high but centerd above the dot still 2 pellets and my 250gr. Shockwave rounds. I'm happy with the 2 pellet results and ready for gun season opener this Saturday. If I can do that well this weekend heart and lungs are toast on my Deer.

I am too, but that's what was posted by the guy who did the test. Not Randy.

I don't mess with pellets. They make no sense to me.

Depends on the barrel length with a 44 inch barrel you could burn when you push unburned powder out it not only wastes powder but the added weight actually holds down the velocity if its not burned.
To answer some thing else that was mentioned, By checking with a chronograph you can find the point of efficiency with a 250 gr bullet it is 110 gr of 777, 140 gr of Blackhorn and 130 gr of pyrodex and that is why 130 gr is faster than 150 unless you use a heavy bullet. Blackhorn will burn more more efficiently because it is a Progressive burning powder that also means if you over do it it will take a major jump in pressure.

i could chrono 150gr pellets and 150gr RS if that'd help

For several years i used 150 grains of Pyrodex granular as well as three 50 grain Pyrodex pellets. My CVA Mag Hunter put both to the same point of aim at 100 yards. Killed about 10 deer and a couple dozen hogs with those loads and the 240 grain .430 XTP bullet. Most of those animals went down like they were hit by lightning.

Later went to 100 grain loads and noticed no change in killing power.

Because of one hunting blind that overlooks a huge field; i will boost my Encores charge to 150 grains of 3F Goex Pinnacle. The opportunity is there to make shots to well over 300 yards. i normally do not make muzzleloader shots past 150 yards: But if a big boar hogs stops broadside at 225 yards i want the capability to turn him into pork.

That would be great, while you're at it I wonder if you could do 100 grains of each too.

The only time I use 3 pellets is when the grandkids are over and we have a fire going on the patio, they really are great for a cloud of smoke.:barmy::groupwave::groupwave:
