Columbus Day - OPENING DAY
From the last day of the season - I wait - and wait, wait for this day to arrive... It is here and I have been out... Love it.
IF, I do things right I should be able to hunt from now to the end of December. The way my season breaks out - I opt from the muzzleloading elk hunt (spikes and cows only) 12-2 to 12-9. For that hunt I have to go by Idaho's ML rules, no scopes, caps only, loose powder, and full bore conicals.... But all the rest of the hunting - I can use a modern ML during our rifle season. So from now to 12-2, I am hunting Whitetail and to make the season last I am hunting only for that decent buck... until the last two weeks - then if it has a white tail it might be in jeopordy. Then I have an anterless tag that is good till 12-30 - gotta save that to get through Christmas... so if things go right - 3 wonderful months of hunting... I headed out this morning the one of our spots on State land. I was headed to one of our hot spots - Slaughter House Gulch... It was an eventfull morning several nice Whitetail does and even one Whitetail buck - it was OK but it was not the one - besides this is way to early to shoot... I would end up doing 'Honey Do's" until mid November when the other deer tag kicks in. So it got a walk... Here is a picture looking down Slughter House - the picture does not look like much but it is a good spot... ![]() Headed to another spot in the morning.. We did jump some elk in this area last week while turkey hunting... Speaking of Turkey's after getting back to the truck - there standing the road getting the fill of freshly graded gravel on the road was a bunch of Turkeys - course the season closed yesterday.... |
Pete, I won't go so far as to say I wish I was you but I sure wouldn't mind your schedule for the rest of this year. Good Luck with your hunting my friend.

That sure is nice to be able to hunt with a ML from Oct to Jan. That's a great way to end the year. I have to hunt with sticks and string until Nov.

I love the planning and plotting associated with the start of the season. Which stand for opening day? Which gun? Do I switch areas for the evening hunt, or maybe pack a lunch and stay all day in the North box stand, or in the high chair? Maybe I should sit in the South box until mid-morning and then make a creep through that section they thinned two years ago. Decisions, decisions.
My season opens Nov. 12th. and I expect to hunt every weekend from then until the end of January. It's tough, but it has to be done. My kill plan is different from your's Sabotloader. I'm popping a cap on the first mature doe I see, and probably the second (our club has a two-doe limit). Once meat is in the freezer I'll be content to spend the remainder of the season enjoying the woods and hoping a nice buck comes along. Of course, I'll be sending lead toward any hogs, bobcats or coyotes silly enough to show themselves in daylight. |
Good luck sabotloader. I hope you get to see what you're after.

See that sounds like a whole lot more fun... but I have to stay the course to keep me in the game plan... or I could be working for my wife... |
Wow! I'm jealous of your long season. Good luck.

All the deer hunting really is nothing more than keepng track of the elk... |
True, but you're out there with a gun in hand. The right animal can show up at any time. It makes it exciting. Much more than just being there scouting.
