I've been looking at this one for a couple of months but have resisted the temptation so far.

That would be the way to go. Besides working better. It looks 1000% better than the black plastic crap.

I had one of the Omega's with the laminated stock. And it was an exttremely accurate rifle. Once I found the right load I would say it was the most accurate MZ I have ever shot. But it had a hiccup with that accuracy. You had to pound in the first shot. and it was impossible to load a second shot. You simply could not get a second shot down the barrel without a full cleaning. So the rifle was extremely finicky. And I flat out do not like finicky rifles. So I got rid of it.

I also had some dirt in the area around the seal. Tom.

An honest review of the pros and cons of the Omega I owned. I repeat. The Omega I owned. You may get a better one.

Pros:

Pretty accurate. Nothing exceptional. It didn't like conicals except for the Thor.

Light

Cheap (price)

Shoots BH 209 well with stock BP.

Cons:

Creepy trigger

Blowback from primer.

Light ( felt recoil)

Hard on cheek recoil. (Thumbhole may be better)

Ramrod will fall out on recoil. (TC has no answer for this)

Sights will not work the way they come. (TC has no answer for this) (moot point if you scope it)

Removing barrel changes POI. (I had the cheap flexy Z5)

My experience wasn't that good. I wouldn't buy another one. You may have better luck. Others seem to. I don't see an inline in my future, but if there was. I'd buy a Knight.

What about the Hornady FTB's ??

Muley Hunter 10-10-2011 05:29 PM

On mine. The barrel was too tight. They worked good on the Wolf.

I was just wondering because I remembered you said something about shooting them in your omega that you had on Jon's forum. here was your range report.

I drove to my local gun shop, because I knew he stocked the FTB. I've bought some in the past, but ended up throwing them away. I couldn't get them to load in 3 CVA's and a Renegade. I took a chance they would fit the Omega. They did. They actually fit perfect. I don't need a ball starter, and they have a nice resistance all the way down the barrel. No way will they move off the powder, but no fear of loading them while in the field hunting.

They didn't have the 300gr, so I had to buy the 350 gr. More than I wanted. I didn't want to bang my shoulder too hard, so I loaded 90 gr of BH 209 with CCI 209M primers.

The scope wasn't really sighted in for anything. So, I wasn't expecting much. My first shot was 25 yds to see where it was going to shoot. I swear this is the truth. I couldn't have placed a hole in the bull any more perfect. I laughed. I didn't even bother with a second shot. I moved to 75 yds. I know you guys will say i'm full of crap, but I swear it was dead center again. I did shoot a bunch more at 100yds, but i'm not going to even tell you how that turned out. I'll just say it was pretty good. I wish I had a camera.

One thing I did decide today. I've been going back and forth with a scope. There's little doubt that I shoot better with a scope. No surprise there. The problem is I hate scopes! I've shot open sights all my life. I've tried raising the comb on the Omega, but it just doesn't feel right. I don't feel like i'm part of the gun like I want. The Omega feels perfect to me with no scope. A nice tight cheek weld with everything lined up perfect. The gun is nice and light and carries so much better without a scope. Never a worry of fogging up, or worrying about knocking the zero out of alignment. I just love guns without scopes.

When I thought like this in the past I would think if i'm not going to use a scope. Why not go back to hunting with the Renegade. Not this time. The Omega is much lighter, more accurate, and weather proof. It's a better gun to hunt with.

I've killed enough game in my lifetime. I think having fun is more important to me now. I still want to fill my freezer, but it's not the end of the world if I don't. My range with open sights is at best 60-70 yds. Maybe even less. We'll see. I think it will be fun and challenging to have to get closer now.

So, i'm going to use the FTB bullets. They fit my barrel better than Thors. They cost $14 out the door for 15 compared to Thors $25 for 14. That will let me shoot more, and they're much easier for me to get. I'm also thinking that 80 gr of BH 209 with the 350gr FTB will be plenty for my hunting distance.

Anyway, it feels good to settle on a gun, bullet, powder, and style of hunting finally.

Thanks for listening. :rendeer:

Well, that comes from getting old. You're right. It was the Wolf that was too tight.

Now that I think about it. The FPB's were tight in all my CVA's

My bad.

Love my Z5. I've never had rust from the blowby, and I've had it together for weeks after shooting it, before taking it apart for a good cleaning. My Z5 has a great trigger, and I've practically had a hard time picking a load that won't stay inside 2" (still don't recall a load that shot bad through it). A lot of guys report tough loading in T/C bores...I can't really comment because I swab between shots. Can't really think of much for negatives for my use of the rifle. It's affordable, it has hardly any moving parts, shoots great.. I'd do it again if I was choosing a rifle today.

I've had zero blow by issues with my omega (X7) using BH209 and STS or 209m primers.

Some really good deals on Gunbroker right now.

I would definitely look for a laminated version.

The 3rd link you posted looks nice but one thing concerns me.

Performance Shooting, Inc. doesn’t inspect any used firearms prior to selling, and doesn’t test to see if they function correctly, used firearms purchased come with no warranty,
That gives them a ton of room to refuse a refund if the bore is badly pitted ot there are other problems. It sure looks nice though and the Buy it Now isnt bad at all IF its in excellent shape. New standard laminates are only $75 more and $4.95 shipping from 3rdGeneration and i know they stand behind the sale if you are not happy.
