lookin for a 44
 

Hey guys normally i'd go to gunbroker for this but im tired of getting screwed on that place.

Im lookin for a .44cal cap n ball revolver with a steel frame. Has to be in good working order of course.

Anyone have one to sell?

My .02 cents worth I bought my BP .44 revolver brass frame off GB a few weeks ago and love it. The steel frame is a little more pricey but if I had to do it again Cabela's was only $40 more than I paid for mine and you would not have to worry about rust.

Cabelas has the Remington 1858 and Colt 1860 for $189.

If you buy an 1858 Remington buy the one with sights I have both types. The sighted one is a lot easier to shoot. Also a 452 ball is the correct size for the Cabela 44.

Pretty hard to find a .452 ball. I'm not sure they even make a mould. Commercial sizes are .451, .454, and .457. Cabelas sells Pietta guns that like the.454 ball.

Is that what you meant?

I don't want someone pulling their hair out looking for a .452 ball. ;)

Well I learned something new today. Why do they call them .44 cal when you use a .45 cal ball?

The .45 ball is slightly oversize to the cylinder. Some lead is shaved from the ball as it's seated in the cylinder to form a tight seal.

The cylinder is also slightly larger than the .44 bore. The ball is swagged into the bore by the forcing cone when fired.

I'm sure the dimensions are slightly different for each manufacturer.

My 1858 Pietta Target model uses a .451 roundball. 20 grains of JSG 3f and it is accurate and a lot of fun to shoot. I can't believe how expensive they have gotten.

A lot of people wonder that. The gun is a .45, because when you do a cartridge conversion they shoot .45's.

That is the truth. I have the receit for the 1851 confederate I let go a couple of months ago. As a Christmas special in 1997 it was around $90 from Bass Pro, today I think its around $250
