Twist Rate
Nothing will happen until this coming spring, but I'm thinking about going with a custom barrel for the Pro Hunter. Not sure if I'm going to go with .45 or .50, but what would you all consider the optimal twist rate for either? I would like something to shoot both saboted and conicals, though I'll probably shoot more saboted than conicals. I'm thinking 1 in 28" is probably pretty close to the best for .50, but not sure about .45. I'm thinking probably 1 in 20"?
So, if you were going to have your own barrel made, what twist rate would you want? And while we're at it, what length would you go with? |
1/24 works for both. And we already know the sabots hold up easily with the 1/24 twist.
1:28 on the .50 and 1:30 for the .45 cal.
If you're going to be shooting strictly conicals / saboted then definately the 1:24. This twist will give you better stabilization for a wider variety of bullet lengths/weights.
Doesn't the depth of rifling come into play with all this? If I were going custom, it would be a barrel identical to my White Model 97 which is .50 caliber, 1-24 twist but I don't know the depth of rifling. It will shoot conicals to perfection and even sabots.
