I carry mine in my hand or over my shoulder, butt rearward and held by the barrel.

I use screw in studs on the ramrod ferrule and a standard high powered rifle sling on all my rifles.

I use a "gun butt holster" that attaches to a belt. They're hard to find but I've seen similar items that are a type of utility pouch for store clerks or part of a technician's tool belt.
A [shallow] shotshell pouch would make an acceptable substitute or construct your own.
I don't like hunting without one because it makes carrying long guns easy on the arms and shoulders.

I do quite a bit of hiking through the brush. I use a Boonie Safari Sling. Lets me keep my hands free to push aside the branches and still keep the gun in a decent position for a shot. Also lets you carry it pointing down.

Some don't like it, most do.
