Never say never!!
After the numerous times that I have had to eat my words by saying never, you would think I would know better. But once again after saying I would never do something I find myself doing just that. I said I would never shoot smokeless so I used Blackhorn in my savage and only shot it one session for about 10 shots. Well I was given several different powders that are listed as usable in the savage so I have decided to try smokeless. I was even given a small electronic scale, which is why I was weighing all them bullets in a previous post.
So I think I will give the 10ml a second outing :s2: |
I've had my never shoved down my never many times.. have fun shooting that Savage.

Oh, the shame! :s2:
(And they say I crossed the line scoping a sidelock.) |
It is fun and no bore cleanup later. They actually shoot better dirty. Less recoil at the same fps and bullet weight. The pucker factor starts to go away after about 75 shots. :p Unless you are trying a new load and you know its going to be stout. :D
I have a RCBS ChargeMaster 1500 combo and then drop all the charges into tubes. I can load up 100 tubes in about 35 minutes without rushing. I dont know what powders you have but N110 is super clean, SR4759 (in a jug) isnt bad and pressures are a bit less than N110. Re7 and N120 will launch a 300gr or 325gr FTX as fast as you want to shoot them even with very mild pressures. :D Plus nearly all the above ignite as easy as BH209 as far as i can tell. BTW i dont even bother with max loads much even if they shoot good. Low to mid range has worked great and let your barrel cool down a LONG time. 15 minutes without additional cooling if its over 70F. |
I wish I had some n110 or sr4759 but neither was available .what I was given was reloader7 ,h4227,alliant 2400 and lil gun. The lil gun I might not try.I read in one website it's all the guy will use while other sites warn never to use it or any ball powder. If I ever come across n110 that's what I might experiment with.in the mean time I'll try this free powder

Out of those i would use Re7 55-63gr with a 300gr bullet or 325gr FTX. Mine likes 63gr and that's well under max for a 300gr at about 2200fps. A 250gr is too light for good ignition with Re7 unless you really want to crank up the speed to around 2500fps. IMO Re7 is also easier on the vents with mid range loads but since the powder weight for good ignition is higher, it does have a little more kick....Plus its really best for 300gr+ bullets and mid range loads. 4227 is harder to ignite in cooler temps and its not as popular any more but accuracy is supposed to be good. It is one of the safer powders as far as powder weight range. 2400 is the fastest Savage powder and not very popular anymore either. I would only use it with lighter bullets 250gr and under with mild amounts. They don't even list much data for it anymore on DMB. Use with caution. IMO best all around powder for cost, safety and performance with most bullet weights is 4759 (in the plastic jug) if you cant find N110. 5744 if it MUST go bang every time accurately and max fps is secondary. Its also filthy and smokes like Bh209. :D WARNING THIS DATA IS FOR APPROVED GUNS SUCH AS THE SAVAGE SMOKELESS MLII ONLY |
Good luck shooting. You will like the no swab, no smoke and easy clean up. That's if you feel like cleaning.
I have tubes filled and finally a cooling rod. My Rem 700ML smokeless conversion is getting a work out come Monday. :D |
This makes your prep time faster and IMO a bit safer if you use the clear tubes like Lanes. You can verify them by a quick tap down and compare the graduation marks. I TRIPLE check all SML loads and i am extremely careful with my witness marks. The Knight/Lehigh Ultimate range rod REALLY helped out with that part.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwGrlzrVAC8 It even works with BH209 but no other subs. |
It wouldn't bother me to shoot smokeless in an inline. Then i'd shoot it in rifle season where it belongs. :poke:
