Best combination for 200 yard shooting
What do you guys consider the best bullet and sabot combination for effective and accurate 200 yard deer hunting.
This is a sabot and bullet thread, not a conical bullet question. I have a good conical bullet and powder combination. I am trying to put together a sabot and jacketed bullet combination.
I am going to give in to you guys and try a couple of jugs of the BH-209. So since you guys talked me into it. I am going to put together a second load for a bullet and sabot combination with the BH-209 in my Knight LRH.
I ordered a new scope for the rifle a few minutes ago. And I am going to order some powder, and possibly that Lehigh conversion tomorrow. WV has an early MZ season this year on Sept. 19. And my FL I am having made will not be here by then.
So I just want to have some fun with my LRH, and put in some range time over the next couple of weeks. And a big fat WV doe in the freezer!! And this sounds like a fun way to do it.
So lets here what you guys think. This should be a fun thread. I have a few combinations of sabots and bullets on the shelf. But I do not want to say what they are yet. I do not want to influence your opinions. Thanks, Tom.

Of course it depends on what your gun likes to a large extent.
The two combinations that are really supper in my guns are the Shock Wave 200 gr 50/40 and the Lehigh 200gr 50/40 I load them with enough BH to give me 2350 FPS.
A hint do not try these loads in cheap guns the barrels are not strong enough I would not use them in any thing but the old Knights or a TC. I believe the Encore is the strongest gun out there and that's what I shoot.
There are other 200 yard loads that work quit well they have a bit more drop so judging the distance and knowing the drop is more critical.
The 250 gr Shock Wave is famous for its accuracy with the short black Harvester and 120 gr of BH and accuracy is the real key to any long range shooting.
I have also had excellent results with the 250 gr FTX and loading it up to 2200 FPS.
Long range shooting is a lot of fun but if you use it on game then the terminal effects of the bullet come into play and my opportunities for that have been somewhat limited, the bullets that I can vouch for are the Bonded 250 gr Shock Wave the 50/40 200 gr Lehigh and the 50/40 200gr Shock Wave.

I have only taken 2deer over 200 yards and both were with the shockwave bullet. As far as close to 200 I have taken one deer with the barnes tmz. I am experimenting with the lehighs now and think they will do the job at that distance also.I shoot 130 gr 777 and 120 gr blackthorn.that's what my elite and extreme like.my triumph likes 120 gr 777 . As far as shooting paper at that distance I have had good accuracy with PR dead center bullets and barnes 290 gr tmz as well as shockwaves in 200 and 250 gr

So changing gears a bit... thinking a 50 cal... wait a minute Lehigh makes a .458-220 grain DOA... Shoot actulally nevermind go with the best all-around that Lehigh makes. The .458-275 grain in a MMP Orange sabot - same powder load.
I have shot the 275's at the farm to 250 yards. I think you really might be surprised how well they fly at that distance. I know it really surprised me.
I actually thought I had a picture of that shooting but can not find it...
I really should have added, there are bullets with higher BC's and that will fly flatter, but i do not believe they will perform in the animal the way that the DOA does...

These have worked well for me;
.45 DISC Elite - 120gr BH209, 200gr Shockwave, .45/.40 supplied tan sabot, W209, original Knight NFPJ breech plug
.50 DISC Extreme - 120gr BH209, 250gr SST, .50/.45 Harvester smooth black sabot, W209, Lehigh breech plug
I have taken one deer at just over 200 yards with the 200gr SW and it worked very well. It was from a very steady rest and the deer was injured by another hunter. I prefer to shoot as much under that distance as possible, but I know what the gun and I can do under favorable conditions.

Myself, i can't really comment on what is the 'best', but i can share my current 200 yard load. In my Omega i am currently using 300g Deep Curl bullet in short black Harvester sabot. Here is a target shot with them bullet at 271 yard.
This past winter i set 3 gallon jugs filled with water at about 203 yard or so, and shot a Deep Curl bullet into them. The 300g Deep Curl ended up in the last jug. The bullet lost no weight, and was quite 'pretty' when recovered.
Also managed to get a Video of the impact.

The .250 gr Barnes TEZ or the .295 gr version is even better at longer ranges.IMHO the .200 gr bullet is to light at 200 yds and to get it to say 2300-2400 FPS one has to use 130-140 gr Bh209. which is beyond what is approved by western powders.a .295-.300 gr quality bullet like a Barnes at 200 yds will put the smack down on a deer! i also wouldn't hesitate to shoot a .300 gr harvester PT gold at those ranges either..
