Knight Mountaineer & primers
In view of the earlier post discussing possible issues with the bolt on his Knight Mountaineer, I decided to try out different primers with my new Mountaineer to see if I was going to have a problem too. I have not yet had time to go the range. Plus, I am saving $$ to buy a scope for it.
I tried the following primers without any loads: Federal 209A CCI 209M Remington STS Winchester W209 Winchester 777 I shot about 3 primers per each type. I had no troubles closing the bolt, opening the bolt after a shot, or ejecting the primer from the bolt. Everything worked well. There might have been some differences with two brands of the primers. With the Winchester 777 primers, the bolt was quite easy to close and open. With the Remington STS, the bolt seemed to stick a little when opening the bolt after the shot. The differences among primers, though, was very slight, and the differences may have been purely subjective. I don't know if there would be an objective reason for any of this. The gun is just beautiful, although I am biased toward Knights. The trigger is sweet. It may just cure my flinching. |

Amen to that..........I'm sure I was the "one" lucky person, but I doubt it will to long before it is up and running. Cantermembermyid, glad you like yours and they are beautiful guns! What kind of scope are you going to put on the top of that beast?
I was thinking about a Minox 2-10 variable power, although I'm not sure I want to pay that much money. |
When trying out the different primer types, I slide the primers in the groove in the bolt. The groove is designed for this, as noted in Grouse's separate post.
You cannot put a plastic jacket in the Mountaineer bolt, or at least I could not on mine. The opening on the bolt for the primer is too small. If you want to use the plastic jackets with the Mountaineer, I suppose you could use the bolt and breechplug from Knight's Extreme or Long Range Hunter. But I don't know this for sure. The red plastic jackets are certainly easier to handle than a bare primer. But for now, I will stick with the bare primer on the Mountaineer. |
All, The Mountaineer can be ordered in bare primer or red plastic jacket design. The ignition system for the Mountaineer will not interchange with any other model of Knight (Extreme, Elite, LRH, Master Hunter).
