well i got pictures from 830pm last night. The momma came into the water with the baby. She is big time blond fazed bear that just hangs off her. I got a couple cute pics of the baby sitting by the water drinking.
Man though, this is probably going to screw up my deer herd though dont you think?

I had bear once and that was one time too many. It was horrible. And my friend had just the right recipe. He cooked for two and a half days. I will not shoot a bear unless he is trying to hurt me.
As to big bears killing small ones, that is true. However, the way I heard it was that the male will kill the cubs to bring the female into heat, so they can mate with them.

Messing with a cub bear is a big mistake. In about 1956 i had a summer time job on a survey crew. We scared up a sow and one big cub that weighed about 70-80 pounds. The sow went over the woven wire fence with no problem but the cub could not get over the fence. He just kept butting it.
The survey crew leader weighed about 200 pounds: He ran and grabbed that little bear and got tore up instantly. The cub clawed his arms, face, chest and belly and bit him in all over the place. We tore up our shirts for bandages and got the bleeding stopped. Then the boss had the Pasteur treatment for rabies: About 20 injections around the belly button.

rafsob that is true. The male will kill the cubs to bring the female back into heat. But the male bear is a strange animal. I have had two close proximity encounters with bear, and to this day they still bother me. A good rule of thumb.. you see a bear make a lot of noise and go the other way. Now a sow and cubs is dangerous, no doubt. When I spot a cub, I back out of there real fast.
The trick to cooking bear is every little speck of bear fat has to be removed before you cook that thing. Also roasting over fire is the best and only way I want to eat it. It also makes real good sausage.

Rafsob- Apparently your friend can't cook or the meat was bad to begin with. I had a cousin who had bison and said it was horrible too. That was until I made a bison roast up the cabin last year with mashed taters, gravy and veggies. He sure thought it was pretty good then.
Just like any meat, if it is cared for properly before, during and after buchering, and then prepared correctly, bear meat is delicious. With a texture very similar to beef.

Our bear season starts in September. And it is of the utmost importance that once that bear is shot, its skinned, meat washed and then cooled ASAP. That is how you make good bear meat. And again, before you cook that, make sure there is no fat on it. Bear steaks cooked over a open camp fire are just plain hard to beat for eating. Or a bear roast, on a Brinkman Smoker is another excellent way.

That's interesting... because my wife's grandparents own several thousand acres in 69 and 84 and they have only seen 1 bear on their place. Plenty of deer and pronghorn though.
