You are right Arctic. Its best to start low and gradually increase the charge and watch the group size shrink down and down and then begin to enlarge again. Its the only way to find the rifle's sweet spot. And sometimes its amazing the difference even 5 gr makes.

The them big conical bullets, 60 grains is a good enough load for around here. But I am going to kick it up some as I test more.

It takes a lot of energy to get them big old chunks of lead moving down the bore. Heavy charges can be punishing on both ends of the muzzle.

I shoot them 385's out of my New Eglander with 80gr loads.You better have a hold of her,and have your teeth clenched. Of course shooting at deer,you won't notice

Where there is a Trade Rifle, there is always hope.

By the way, I found your second shot. The red arrows indicate an elongation of these opposite sides, formed by, two almost identical shots.
