Getting ready for a good season.

About two weeks ago i finished up this shack for Rifle season in Ohio. Probably more so for January. I actually have a ladder stand right behind this shack for early season. And about 70 yards down over the hill i will put up a ladder stand and archery hunt out of it.

Yesterday afternoon i started building another one i'm going to put in the middle of a food plot. The part of this property i want to hunt has no good tree's for a ladder stand so i built another shack this weekend. I plan on plowing up at least a half acre and planting turn ups and some corn or alfalfa. I plan on putting this one about 12 feet in the air.

Bah! Food plots, stands, baiting!

No skill hunting.

Gm54-120 08-07-2011 05:35 PM

Looking good. Mine isnt portable but it works.

Its so much nicer when its cold and the Mr Heater is keeping me toasty warm on the couch. :D

I built it 6x5 outside dimensions. I get the windows for free, but the wood is pretty expensive. Plenty of room for two and a heater if needed. I just like staying out of the wind.

Do you hunt the primitive season?

I wish Colorado had one. I'd sell every gun I have, and build a flintlock.

Mine wont be portable either. Going to put it about 12 feet high in the air. That's a pretty good idea though, portable shack or blind????? You really got be thinking about that one.:cool2:

We can only use a Flintlock in ML season for Buck and Doe.

I know. That's why I wish we had one here. Do you hunt it?

I thought braving the elements and freezing your sack off.....is all part of hunting.... you guys are soft.

Maybe it seems so cold, because YOU"RE JUST SITTING THERE.

Get out and move around. You'll be sweating in no time. Do you think Colorado is warm?

Nope but have MLer hunted in -10 and a -35 windchill in a stand....hand warmers in my boot and gloves and shivering to get warm.

Grouse45 08-07-2011 06:44 PM

Flintlock season is the day after Christmas here in PA. I pretty much at least shoot one Deer with it a year. I dont talk about it much because most people don't really understand Flintlocks or even use them.

Guys on here complain way to much about in lines to be able and successful with a Flintlock. I shoot 300grn QT's and Goex. Trying to get a bullet made for 1/48 twist but have not had any luck lately.

Goex is getting some crap about there powder being weak. I hope they dont change it because my Lyman Deer Stalker is only rated for 100grns by volume.

Muley Hunter 08-07-2011 06:49 PM

I thought it was a primitive season? They make you use a flintlock, and not a PRB?

That's lame.

They just changed that about 6 years ago, i'm glad they did. PRB'S are like Knuckle balls in my opinion. No scopes aloud either. I shot many Deer with PRB"S, the Deer deserve much better.

50calty 08-07-2011 06:55 PM

What the crap? What happen to going out to public land and walking? No baiting, no grow your own buck, sit in a warm building and wait for your 50 yard shot? That would just drive me nuts. Your not even stalking the prey. I have more fun in stalking then shooting anymore. Do I get record or even big bucks? No, but I have fun. I wonder how many people could actually handle the way I was taught to hunt. Avg day is 10 miles no matter how warm or cold. I remember numerous times hunting till noon and sitting down for lunch to find out your water is froze as is the sandwiches. Gotta start a fire to thaw everything out. Then shooting something and draging it 4 plus miles. Now thats huntin!

The whole point of hunting primitive is the challenge of getting closer. Just like they had to do in the day flintlocks were used.

How is using a modern bullet primitive? Pennsylvania caved in to the pressure. Pretty sad.

Gm54-120 08-07-2011 07:01 PM

Our ML season is in January too and after an auto accident, long walks in the cold don't workout well for me. When its nice i do walk the 1000+ acres we hunt, its about a 2 mile walk to the next stand and no real trail to follow.

The way i look at it....ive walked hundreds of miles hunting over the years and i deserve a break once in a while. Ive let many deer walk away because i was comfortable enough in a stand to wait for the one i wanted....Which isnt always a trophy buck either. Sometimes we intentionally thin out the does if we dont see much sign of bucks before the season.

Muley Hunter 08-07-2011 07:04 PM

I have a different outlook GM.

It's not the kill. It's the hunt that's important.

Gm54-120 08-07-2011 07:08 PM

I look at it like heard management and food on the table. Ive had my fair share of stalking hunts including using a ML during the last 10+ rifle seasons.

Looking down on someone for using a stand is as bad as the buttflappers ragging on inline shooters. I guess i could say the same thing about you using a fancy Thor and me using a 36 cent bullet.

Semisane 08-07-2011 07:24 PM

i started building another one i'm going to put in the middle of a food plot.
I would not recommend that Grouse. I have a lot of experience with box stands. The most successful ones are always ten or more yards off of the food plot, with some brush or trees between the plot and stand. Be sure to consider the normal prevailing wind during your hunting season and place the box down wind.

You have no idea how much I hate even using an inline. I don't expect it to last much longer. It really rubs me the wrong way.

Especially, since i've made everything to go primitive. I don't need a primitive season to hunt that way. I took a wrong turn somewhere. I need to get back on track.

SuperKirby 08-08-2011 05:12 AM

I hunt from a tree stand now. I hate it. I grew up hunting in Wyoming and we walked sunup to sundown. That said, I understand hunting from a stand or blind here. During rifle/shotgun season, there's too many people in the woods to be able to go walking. Somebody would probably shoot you. For muzzleloader season, I try to get down and walk some but I wouldn't consider it practical, at least not where I hunt. Last year the last time I went for a walk the snow was up to my knees, and walking through a swamp with snow that deep is pretty hard on the ankles and knees when you can't see where you're walking.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think your right and will do that.

Myself, i only have to feed wife and i, but as simple as that may sound, it is quite important to us. I hunt to kill, and that is the way it is. However, sneaking around in the timber, for me, is one of life's greatest experience. I much prefer hunting to shooting. I much prefer shooting to chores.

Gm54-120 08-08-2011 05:44 AM

Muley Hunter

I highly respect your choice to make it more challenging but i dont think your choice should be what others are forced to endure unless they want to enjoy a totally primitive season

We have special DNR lottery type hunts that are more restrictive and have great harvest rates. I wouldn't want them to change a thing so those guys can enjoy their passion too on prime hunting areas such as Bushs WildLife refuge or Logan refuge where all hunting is normally banned.. They are farily restrictive on that hunt and some others are even more strict.

Stalking Eastern Whitetail in the woods? They'd be ROTFLOA.

I was just about to add this. People in CO and MT and other states out west don't seem to understand you can't walk all day and be sucessful hunting in the east. Different territory, different hunting methods. I hunt both, I can vouch for both.

We have a couple guys in our huntin' party that walk all day (in the east). They see a lot of white tails but rarely kill anything.

Doug100g 08-08-2011 07:38 AM

I get my primitive hunting feeling out of me during Bow season. When gun season comes along with two feet of snow and 10 degree weather, I am going to pop up a blind on the edge of a corn field and relax. It is very important that other people stalk the deer so that they drive them my way.

The best way to shoot my muzzy is between rabbit ears which is on the portable tv. I have my beer stash on the right side of me, and pizza on the left.

My fireplace is a 20 gallon tank of propane with a Mr Heater on top. I prefer to keep it hot enough that I can hunt in my underwear.

Its also important to bring the Terrible Towel for game time. One must learn to wave it low so deer cannot make you. They have no team pride.

I also place my grandmas famous apple pie in one of the blinds windows. This will attract deer. Problem is, if deer don't come soon it will be eaten by half-time.

You know...I just love the outdoors and the challenges it presents.

It makes no difference to me what everyone else is doing. If i want to hunt with a Flintlock and patch round ball in rifle season i will. If i want to use a recurve bow in gun season i will. I dont let others dictate what i do. I hunt with what i want to hunt with. Obviously within the regulations as well.

Gm54-120 08-08-2011 08:33 AM

Stalk hunt parts of Missouri when you get a warm November and you will be covered in tics and chigger bites so bad it might even make you sick.

Maybe we should look down on anyone that uses a ATV to get to his camp or haul out his harvest too. ;)

MountainDevil54 08-08-2011 08:34 AM

or uses smokeless during muzzle loader season and shoots out to 300+ yards.

Gm54-120 08-08-2011 08:36 AM

Show me where i shoot 300 yards. Besides old Gibbs and Docs sporting rifles will shoot that far no problem. Ive never used a SML yet on deer so... LOL fool.

Please

Or illegally puts out feeders like you did
