Gold Dots vs. Deep Curl
 

Can someone explain the difference between these two. Is the Deep Curl just an updated version?
I belive they both are electroplated--bonded jacket?
If it is an update, I see that they are both sold on internet.
Definitely plan to try these in Savage ML before season with both MMP short sabots & Harv. RCR sabots.
I'm thinkin this bullet would be an excellent replacement/alternative to the XTP!!

Name change due to lawyers and what constitutes unreasonable lethal force. Now defense and hunting HANDGUN bullets have different names. I think the majority of rifle bullets still use the term UniCore ot HotCor. You might want to try one of the 458s in the Savage with smokeless. They should be a great fps match and 458s are usually more accurate. Im not sure but i think the 458s are flat based too. The cupped base on a DC/GD might not work well with smokeless.

Its just more waist of the tax payers money and greedy lawyers.

I have shot the Rem 300 gr .458 bullets in Savage as well as the XTP (.452?)
The XTP's do good in the Savage with the MMP shorts,but are known to fragment/separate.
Would think a bonded bullet such as Gold Dots would give good results and stay together better. Better terminal velocity/pass thrus/blood trails is what I want.
Top range is 150-170 yds.

By far in all my test. (Which you can look up) The Deep Curl is by far the better bullet compared to the XTP Mag. Has better BC resulting in more energy/less drop at longer ranges. At 100 yards there isn't much difference, but the further the range the better Deep Curl is. I would use the .300 grain Deep Curl. But when you get them it has the new Deep Curl Label.

The Speer 458s ARE bonded just like the DC/GD. ;)

The 300gr is listed as jacketed but it IS UniCor aka DeepCurl aka GoldDot aka bonded :D

Why choose a pistol bullet if they offer a rifle bullet that will perform better at SML speeds? The cupped base on the GD/DC pistol bullets might not work well in a sabot depending on how fast you shoot them. I blew a few cupped based 50cals in 54x50 sabots and just BH209.

It appears the 458 has a cupped base also and the jacket is .022 thick. Far right bullet

The way I understand it is if I keep MV's to 2400-2500 fps range that bullet has less chance of separating. BUT if a bullet is bonded, then there should be no separation,right?
I'm not opposed to using a rifle bullet,but won't a bonded pistol bullet achieve the same thing if kept below 2400 fps? Sometimes there's too much info.-Don't ya know!

To tell you the absolute truth, ive never seen any SML data with the GD/DCs. No one on Dougs seems to use them. I can only guess the 300gr HP in either 452 or 458 should work well IF the cupped base isnt a problem. I really dont know whats going to happen at that speed.

I sure wouldn't push them into the 2500fps range. That is brutal recoil and not really needed. Thats in the 4000fpe range at the muzzle. I shoot the 325gr FTX at near 2300fps and i cant imagine a deer within 200 yards not getting a pass through AND good expansion. My load is a near duplicate of the 450 Marlin which beats most 45/70 data.

IMO stick to 2200-2300 with a 300gr and you will be happy with it on deer. There are lots of good 300gr bullets, pick one and try them out. Very few 300gr bullets will fail to pass through on deer.

Either of the bullets will contain the separation part fairly well. It is still my belief that the Deep Curl with the dot will give better performance in controlling the expansion of the bullet. Again providing more hydrostatic shock and penetration in a animal...

If a bullet gets to large to quick it will do in penetration.

The Partitions are not popular either on Dougs. I dont know why but they will likely handle anything. www.wideners.com still has the 300gr and 260gr for half msrp. ive never tried them with smokeless so i have no idea if they will shoot well. If they do, im certain they will perform well.
