I ordered one today.

Deerhunter Rifle Kit
Percussion .54 Caliber
My first step outside the realm of .50 caliber muzzle loading rifles.
I'm looking forward to working with and shooting this one.

Which one did you get? Are you getting the barrel blued or are you going to have it browned?

pluckit 07-30-2011 04:48 PM

I will be cold bluing the barrel.

Check The hardness of the lock and trigger parts you may wish to case harden them.
With a bunch of work you can make an excellent rifle that could last a life time.
A couple of suggestions: Triaminic acid is one of the original stains and with a bit of work will make a beautiful stock especially if you finish it with Tung nut oil which is also an original finish.

check out the laurel mountain forge stains on the track of the wolf website. Real pretty stains that bring out the wood grain.

That model doesn't ring my bell. I think I would have saved up a little more and got something nicer. Now that is my taste and opinion, sorry. But I guess ugly guns need someone to love them. ;)

This rifle is in the price range that works for me. I don't plan on entering any photo contests with it and as long as it does what it is intended to do, harvest deer, I will be happy with it. It has the features I am looking for which are an adjustable sear screw for trigger pull adjustment. And the barrel is drilled and tapped for a scope.

I think you are going to have a good shooting rifle and the fact that you finished it yourself is going to make that first harvest that much sweeter
