For me, a new direction.
 

Tomorrow I begin to take this hobby in a new direction. I will be ordering a .54 caliber cap lock muzzle loader kit. I first started this trek with a .50 caliber kit and now I think I have enough .50's that I can't find any reason to purchase another. Except for the fact that Wall Mart had a couple that were dirt cheap. A CVA Buckhorn for $147, and a CVA Wolf for $167. I have one of those so that one is out. The Buckhorn was kind of neat. A plunger style 150 grain mag. that used a 209 primer or could be set up to use a #11 cap. Anyway, I had to pass on those and keep focused on the new direction I'm headed.

An excellent choice, the 54 caliber PRB has the best ballistics of PRB's and is a drop them on the spot with the right hit and a decent load. It is more effective within its proper range than most sabot loads as far as deer are concerned. I load my 1-48 with 110 gr of RS my 1-66 with 120 grains of RS and my 1-80 with 130 grains of RS of course these are very strong guns and these loads are with in the recommended max.

When I first decided to branch off in this direction I was checking out the specials page on the Traditions web site. They had a .54 cal. Deerhunter percussion kit for 170 dollars. The next day it was removed from their specials page and I was informed by customer service that it was no longer available. I found one on another site the next day for 230 dollars and was waiting until tomorrow for the funds to purchase it to be put in the bank. I checked today to see if it was still available and it was no longer there. I can't find one anywhere. I really liked the rifle because it has an adjustable sear screw in the lock. Also because the barrel is drilled and tapped for a scope. I started looking at Lyman's today but the price of them is a little out of my league. I guess if I still want to pursue this avenue I will probably have to go with the Green Mountain replacement barrel. I haven't hunted with or even fired my old Thompson Center Hawkins in a few years now because I have pretty much retired her. She has served me well in the past so I guess I'll get a .54 caliber barrel for her from Green mountain and knock the dust off of her and give her new life.
By the way, If anyone knows where I can purchase the Traditions Deerhunter kit in .54 caliber I would love to hear about it

I am basically a lazy cus. I have a .54 cap lock Hawken carbine that I love. It shoots sabots and conicals. And it does it very well. I have the same gun in .50 cal. that shoots PRB.
