Light Load For Youth Hunter
 

Hey Folks,
I'll be using an Omega with 250g shockwaves and T7 ffg.

If I was to limit the shot to 100 yards or less, what load would you recommend as a minimum (yet adequate) load for a youth hunter to cleanly take a deer?

Would the load recommendation change if the shot was limited to say 60 yards?

The thing with the light saboted bullets is they tend to have very light recoil as it is. Even with 90 grains, it's pretty much equivilant to the recoil of a round ball.

We're not talking about a 385gr conical like we used to.

I'd have him shoot a few at 75grains. Whether your kid knows it or not, I'd load 90 when hunting :wink:
If he's big enough to hunt, he should be fine with a full 90 grains with that bullet imo

IMO 60 grains T7 would be minimum for shots out to 100 yards. See what kind of accuracy you get with 60, 65, and 70 grains, then see what he can handle. Even with 70 grains recoil should be pretty minimal. Another option would be to use the 200 Shockwave- I've shot those with 80 grains T7 - recoil is very mild and I've taken 2 deer with this load, 1 at 40 yards and the other at 90 yards.

My 9 year old, shoots a .250 gr gold dot with 65 grains of 777 with no problems.if yours can handles more,all the better! Ray

Try the Barnes 451-225gr XPB and just enough powder to get the groups you want. Its made for 45colt +P speeds and you can practice with the 225gr FTX.

i was just teaching a 13 year old boy to shoot a muzzle loader yesterday. I loaded 70 gr of Blackhorn and a 200gr Shock Wave and he did quite well with it.

Ditto on this. don't be afraid to use a 200grn XTP either.

Ill try a few of these recommended loads and see how the kid feels with it. I'll probably run a comfy load through the Chrony and then do some downrange energy calculations

Ill most likely look for a comfy load that delivers the "accepted" 1000 lbs of energy up to 100 yds.

IMO, with 250 g sabots and 100 g powder, it has equivalent recoil to a 12 gauge with bird shot. A good recoil pad and in my opinion, anyone can really shoot those amounts all day long.

You don't need a large powder charge to kill deer...I use 80grs FFF Goex in both my Knight and my .54 flintlock...Remember the 45/70 used 70grs of FF powder and a 405gr bullet...

I would change bullets though...A poly tipped bullet opens up better with more velocity...I'd go to a Hornady XTP .430 240gr hollow point...Put 60grs 777 behind it and it will do all that needs to be done within 100 yards...
