I make my own out of bees wax and castor oil. It was nice and soft, but was not melting on me at all. I would take a good dollop on my fingers, pack the cylinders and then wipe my hands.

Rather than using grease over the balls I punch out my own over powder cards from the wax board of juice and dairy cartons to help prevent chainfire. I think that they may also help to increase the powder compression and velocity from the 30+ grain loads of APP. Rough cut OP cards could easily be press formed into the chambers using the rammer or a wooden dowel. Grease can still be placed over the balls if necessary. Some folks use a thin bead of Vaseline or petroleum jelly to seal the balls and to lubricate during firing. While the jelly can still melt from heat only a very small amount is needed.
Cayugad's range report led me to want to go and fire my Remington so on Friday I went to the range to make some smoke with it.
I experimented with "triple lubing" the cylinder pin with mineral oil in between each cylinder swap which did help to make for a lot easier removal than during previous range sessions.
I also confirmed that my gun tends to shoot more to the left at first, which then straightens out more as the gun heats up from firing.
Sometimes the trigger felt like it was sticking so I applied even more oil using a cotton swab.
Before long the grip became slippery even though I kept wiping the excess oil off with a rag. That sure made it more of a challenge to hold on to the gun securely while firing. But it was still a lot of fun and felt like being at the local fireworks display on the 4th of July. For the relatively small amount of powder loaded into an 1858 Remington, a tremendous amount of power is produced that's accompanied by a very high fun factor.
