Hmmm, I should try and find a place to hunt in MD. I'm only a hop, skip and a jump away. (Or maybe someone from HNI could invite me....)

Wow the deer must be thick around there. I just hope Maryland does not make the same mistake Wisconsin did. We once had a lot of deer in the State. The DNR decided to slaughter the herd. They basically did the same thing your State is doing. Generous bag limits on does. They even forced the same thing ... doe only season and then their famous "earn a buck" season. This resulted in the mass slaughter of does. And now in some areas of our state, hunters report not seeing any deer during season. Although they are making a come back finally.

WOW what limits and the pricing even for non residents is practical ,hmmm now Im gonna be thinking about a road trip.

I am at the point of believing that fish and game departments don't learn from their mistakes. about 10 years ago they open the season on does and allowed 6 does in this zone they keep it that way for two years now the herd finally recover to where the hunting is decent again and they say they are going to up the doe limit to 6 again and they will just about wipe them out again and the hunting will be awful for 6 or 7 years again. I wonder what they are trying to prove.

I hunt on a 60 acre piece of land that is owned by an older couple. I feel fortunate to be allowed to hunt there and feel it is not my place to ask if anyone else might be able to hunt there. I hunt there with the grandson of the owners. 60 acres has litte room to accomodate another hunter, but if it were up to me, I would be happy to invite anyone of the members here.

To bad Maryland is on the other side of the world to me. Or else I would go hunt there in a heart beat.

Maryland is one of those states that the DNR and the guys who really know the game do not make the laws. In MD the laws are made by politicians and special interest groups. You would be suprised how much influence the insurance industry has on deer limits to prevent deer accidents with cars.

I have been hunting an area in MD(just east of Cumberland) for 40 years. I have also spent a lot of time in the Savage Mountain area.

The area just east of Cumberland has been feast or famine for deer and turkeys for the past 40 years. The past 6 or so years have been slow. But the deer herds are finally coming back. So I would expect the limits to go up from the DNR. And I am not talking about hunting in State lands. I am talking about 2,000 private acres that are about 75% farmlands and 25% forest. I have actually seen over 150 deer in a winter wheat field in this area in the early 90's. And the field was only about 20 acres.

As far as Savage Mountain is concerned. There is a bear behind every tree in that area. But the "bear huggers" won't let you hunt bear. It has been a few years since I have been there, so that may have changed. But the point is the laws in MD are politically motivated, more than most states. Tom.

They have been having bear hunts in Western MD for years now. They take +/- 200 bear a year now, IIRC.

They can shoot more deer than we can catch fish.
