Back To Bizarro

Last month I reported on the amazing results I got using Liquid Wrench as a patch lube when shooting patched balls from my .54 Renegade. (See - http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/blac...rro-world.html)

I ended that report with a plan to try Liquid Wrench lubed patches in the .58 Hawken in my next range session. The .58 sports a 1:70 twist Green Mountain barrel and a TC "Hunter" peep sight.

I followed the same procedure as my last test by shooting two five-shot 50-yard targets with the same load, one with olive oil for the patch lube and one with Liquid Wrench. I fully cleaned the bore between targets and swabbed with one side of an alcohol patch between shots.

Here's the olive oil target.

Pretty darn good (especially for me with iron sights). That will be hard to beat.

Here's the Liquid Wrench target.

Now it would be improper to draw conclusions from only two five-shot groups. One could probably pick either group and present a case that its marginally better than the other one. As for me, I give the edge to the Liquid Wrench group, with the assumption that my 6 o'clock hold on the bull was not vertically precise. (Anyway, that's what I want to believe. :D )

When I started the range session I had every intention of repeating the earlier experiment of shooting two targets each at 50, 75 and 100 yards. But let me tell you, it was miserably HOT on the range today (97* & high humidity)

Even though I had a twenty-inch box fan set up next to the bench blowing on me as I swabbed and loaded, it was blowing mighty hot air. And even though I was wearing only shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops I was sweating like a fat girl in a jitterbug contest.

By the time I finished with those two targets my shirt and underwear were soaked and I wasn't having fun. So more targets at longer distances will have to wait until another day.

(Actually, I shot two other targets before the ones shown above - but with .562 balls instead of .575. But that's a topic for another post.)

Actually that is a pretty tough call as to what was better buddy. I think however I believe the olive oil out shot the LW because it looks like you had one 'flyer' there that caused the group to open up. Otherwise the other 4 were virtually in the same hole. And with the LW, it looks like you got a little verticle stringing going on. But like you said, this doesn't prove much except that 1. You shoot that rifle pretty well and 2. You sweat alot under a little heat. (ps: we dont need to here about your sweaty underwear. That's just TMI).

When reporting on a test, it is incumbent upon the reporter to describe environmental factors relative to the test. I though the heat/wet underwear significant, and therefore noted them.

I did, however, refrain from describing the resulting diaper rash that developed from walking to and from the target in sweat soaked drawers. :D

Semi...I'm proud of you...

I quit wearing underwear years ago... :)

That's some dandy shootin' there Semi! I have all but given up on shooting this year. I shoot one time and I could cook an egg on the barrel.

I must say, I tried your olive oil as a patch lube a year or so ago and was thoroughly impressed with the results. I guess I'm going to have to find some liquid wrench now...

Also, you need to get you some foam boards from Hobby Lobby (or the like) to tack your targets to. Makes for real clean holes in the target :s4:

That is excellent shooting Semi especially in 97* and humidity, It gets in 80s and Im not so inclined to sweat at a hot dusty range. And as usual you had me grinning with literary style.

Maybe I'm just looking at it wrong but it sure appears the liquid wrench bullets cut good clean holes and the other was raggedy looking although mighty good shooting. The weather here in Charlotte is stuck in the 90's. I hope it cools off cause I have Friday off and want to hit the range.

Probably because they were in a vertical string, whereas the olive oil group was more "rounded" allowing more tearing of the paper.

Hmmm And here all the while I thought your paper punch was getting duller!

...wadded panties and hot lead! Now that's what it is all about!
