Conical Recommendation?
Any suggestions on a conical for a 54 Renegade with the original 1/48 twist?
I'm looking for price and accuracy. I'll probably shoot a lot more paper than anything else. The Maxiballs and GP Hunters are a little spendy for just plunking around. I'm shooting PRB's now but want to try something else. Thanks again, |
The 300 grain REAL conical bullets that you can cast at home shoot well for me out to about 75 yards. You don't need a lot of powder either. They also work for killing deer real well.
Bill Davis it is rumored is going to start up back in business. He used to be Black Jack Bullets. He cast a nice bullet at a very reasonable price. You can also try Bull Shop conicals. But I never had any luck shooting his .54 caliber conicals out of my Renegade. |
Cayugad has it right. About the only cheap shooting .54 conical would be the home cast Lee REAL, and they usually shoot decently with light charges. They make a nice clean hole in targets too.

No better way to get started in casting than to shoot heavy conicals. It really is pretty cheap to get started. And will save you a ton of money over the long run. Especialy if you have a place to pick up lead on the cheap. I have been scrounging for lead for over 30 years, so I know where to look. Heck you can lube them with TC bore butter if you want to. Tom.

How does $29 per 100 sound? Check these guys out: http://bullshop.gunloads.com/

The real bullets and the 300gr Hornady FPB shoot well in mine.

Thanks Guys,
Picking up some 300 grain REALS off of Gunbroker from a home caster. With shipping they will be about $15 for 100. Any worries with these? I do lube these things. Right? |
I don't know about the other guys. But I have used Bore Butter in the past for a bullet lube on "dry" conicals. It worked great for me. And I just applied the lube when I was loading. A bit messy that way, but no real big deal.
$15 for 100 shipped is a very good price. I hope they shot well for you. If they do then reorder a bunch real fast. That is a super price. Hopefully the Lee's work for you. Personally I never had any luck with them. I even have a mold for them that I will probably get rid of-they just wouldn't shoot for me. Tom. |
