Sometimes we get lucky!

I'd been shooting the Rem 300gr SJHP .458 with the orange sabots with decent results (3/4 ") groups @ 50 yards, using 50gr of 3f, T7.
Today, before the rain hit, I needed to burn some powder. So... from my lonely Triumph (tough having only one front loader), I shot this target... 1 - my last pre-measured 50 gr charge of T7, 3F. Black line though it, @ 50 yards. 2-4 - 60 gr of 2F Goex @ 50 yards 5-7 - 60 " " " @ 100 yards that's it 7 shots... I'm scared to change anything. I realize these are light loads, but a heck of a lot of fun to shoot! |
nice shooting looks like you have that one figured out!!

Nice shooting.
I'll bet if you bumped that charge up to 80 grains it wouldn't change your point of impact at 50 yards and would flatten out your trajectory at 100 yards. It wouldn't hurt to try. |
Very nice indeed. Not sure what the energy at 100 yds would be. Might be a bit too weak for deer. But good shooting in any event.

All the Triumph's I have personally seen shoot very well but I had no idea that they could do it with that light a charge. Might be just the thing for squirrel. Thanks for posting that.

No, I'm not after a hunting load here... just playing around! Next range session I may or may not bump up the powder.
All I have is my Triumph to play with. It's just interesting to see how many different load configurations I can get it to shoot well. |
It would be interesting to see how fast that 60 grain load of T7 3F is pushing the 300 grain bullet. I don't have any light load velocity data, but I'd bet it's over 1100 fps and would have adequate energy for deer at 100 yards.

Managed to few shots between the dying wind and the on-slot of Black Flies. Needed to try the 300gr .458 at higher loads.
Poor quality targets... printers out of ink. Target 1. 3 shots @ 80gr, group opened upto 3 1/2 Target 2 - 70gr, 2F. After a clean bore shot, 2-4 yielded a nice 3/4" group:guiness: Hope this makes sense, but the second target was actually shot first. I just loaded them in reverse order. |
