Competition for BH209?????

I saw this powder for the first time this weekend. The guy couldn't give me to much information but he gave me a name who could.

Alliant had partnered with Blackmag over a year ago and was almost set to release Black Dot when the MGM plant blew up. Sounds like some much needed competition.

Its rumored that Black Dot is suppose to be able to work in sidelocks.

It appears that Alliant has changed the name from 'Black Dot' to 'Black MZ'... but as Omega said it is really a version Black Mag. I do not think it will offer much of a price break - but I certainly do not know that.

When BlackMag was first out, I got my hands on some. It was a very nice powder to shoot. Easy to clean, and seemed to go off just fine in anything I wanted to load it in. This powder has my interest.

Hopefully it will come in containers bigger then 10oz. :D

Gm54-120 05-02-2011 06:41 PM

The last pricing i saw was the same as BH209 EXCEPT 102grW=100grV. If its the same then it will cost even more to shoot. Even sold by the pound it would be close to BH209 cost per shot. Their Reloader 7 smokeless though is great if you want to come over to the "dark side". :D

The price last year I saw was 27.99 for a 12.5 oz jug of Black Dot IIRC. One of the online stores had a picture and price but it was listed as unavailable. I have an email in to one of my contacts to try to find out further.

Gm54-120 05-02-2011 07:12 PM

Reloader7 is $22lb, very consistent, easy to ignite and loves 325gr FTXs. :p

Oh and you clean when you want. :p

Seriously though it amazes me what subs and real BP cost in my area. Only Grafs BP is kinda cheap. Even Pyro is usually over $20lb.

I have read noting but extremely positive reviews on the black mag. i would be very interested in trying it with conicals. Ray

i was able to get my hands on one pound of Black Mag III and it is a really fine powder. Problem is you could not get the stuff. MDM quit making Black Mag III altogether and concentrated on manufacturing Black Dot for Alliant. Then the plant blew up killing two workers.

OSHA fined MDM 1.2 million dollars and gave 54 safety violations. It appears that MDM will not be making powder any time soon; perhaps never. Alliant may have found another company to manufacture their new BP substitute.

Just browsed the OSHA writeup. i've been involved with explosive ordnance disposal, ammunition storage and ammunition safety for going on 50 years. Have read dozens of OSHA citations and accident reports. Never saw anything like this one at MDM. MDM failed to clean up their act after a previous accident killed one worker.

To save time scroll down to Willful violations:

Alliant hopes to be shipping in July! :groupwave:

Apparently this is not a joint effort between the makers of Blackmag and Alliant.

i love how the label says "virtually non corrosive" thats the most honest answer ive seen in a while.ha!

I checked with our reloading supplier in Sauk City, they have heard of it from Alliant but that's all, when they get more info on it they will pass it on to us.
