Bullets

I was wondering what kind of bullets everyone uses. Last you I used powerbelt but didn' t get the best accuracy with them. I don' t know if it was the bullet or the shooter than was causing the problem. I' m looking for something that is extremely accurate and can take a down a deer at 150 yds. Thanks for the feedback

I use Speer .490 roundballs with 85 grains of pyrodex.

I used to use 385 grain buffalo bore bullets with 100 grains of powder and that worked really good, but on our small southern deer it' s a little more than what I need.

I use LBT Hard Cast type bullets. Good luck.

I don' t know what caliber you shoot, but a .495" round ball loaded to over 2000 fps MV is very accurate in a gun with a slow twist, and it will take down a deer at 150 yards if you take the time to learn your trajectory! ;)

Im using Remington Copper Solids in my muzzleloader and shotgun.
I`ve had great success with them. After seeing so many slugs, bullets dug out of
deer in pieces that 100% weight retention thing has sold me.:)

My new loads this season in cohesion with 777 powder are...
Dead Centers or QTs in the open
Keith Nose in the thickets

RE: Bullets

I' ll second Triple Seven' s suggestion for the QT bullets. They are very accurate, flat shooting bullets that hold their velocity (and therefore energy) well to ranges beyond where I' d feel comfortable shooting. The Dead Centers also look nice but I haven' t shot them so I can' t speak from experience. The difference between the QT and the Dead Center (DC) bullets is that the QT' s have a flat SWC-esque cylindrical area in the middle with the spitzer tip and boattail base, and are designed to expand very rapidly and dump all their energy into the target w/o an exit wound. The DC' s are smoothly shaped spitzer boattails and designed for more controlled expansion so they will shoot through an animal for a better blood trail.

I' ve also used the Keith Nose HP' s, and while they look to be the most viscious lead HP' s I' ve ever seen, I found that I had a hard time loading them without damaging the nose and destroying the accuracy in the process. I think that they are supposed to have a special ramrod tip included but the pack I bought didn' t have it so I was ramming them with the plain ramrod which didn' t do nice things to the soft lead tip. I would like to see what the KNHP would do to a deer though.

RE: Bullets

I' ve been testing different things through a scoped CVA HunterBolt lately and these are my findings:

Saboted 250gr bullet loads with 80gr-120gr pyrodex powder. How can anyone get accuracy with these awful things. Very erratic groups and the plastic fouling is terrible! That must be why Power Belts were invented.

On to Power Belts. I tried the 295gr HP' s with 90gr Pyrodex and got consistent 3 shot groups at 50 yards, but they were barely under 2" . At a dollar a shot, extensive testing with all the bullet weight and powder combinations gets costly.

Pure lead maxi' s. Since I mold the Lee 320gr REAL bullet for my flintlock, I thought I' d use them to clean the plastic outta my bore. What I began to see were sub 1" 3 shot groups at 50 yards with 90gr Pyrodex. Who would have known that something dropping out of a mold at a nickel a bullet could do so well in a non traditional rifle. This will be my October early season load for sure.

What I find is sometimes the simplest things are the best in this world of high tech advanced muzzleloading and flashy new types of pretty plastic and copper bullets.

I' ll sign in with PR bullet offerings too. For sure I' ll use the QTs & Extreme HPs - they' ve been proven killers for me. Still working the Dead Centers for accuracy.

Driftrider,
You might what to try the Barnes MZ bulletloading tip. It fits & works on every bullet I' ve tried over 300gr - and might work with your Keiths too. Have you tried the QT' s or DC' s starter tip with the Keiths??? I think it is the same tip.
