Small conical for the Hawken

I have a TC Hawken 50.

While I'm working on my PRB accuracy, I know it shoots Maxiballs well. The problem with Maxiballs is two fold.

1) They are expensive.

2) They pack a wallup I fine disagreeable for range shooting.

Can anyone suggest a lighter conical which will shoot well for hunting paper targets and not bust the bank?

Thanks in advance,

JSO

What twist? 1:48 ?

Why not save the Maxi's for hunting, and use the PRB for targets?

The PRB will be more accurate.

forgot to ask, which maxi? the 320 or 370? and how much powder you using! Ray

Try some of the REAL conical bullets. Don't put a lot of powder behind them. Normally 60-70 grains is all you need. Sometimes they shoot better with a wad. It all depends on the rifle. They come in two weights. I find that both shoot well but the lighter one tends to shoot a little better in my 1-48 twist rifles.

It's a 1:48 twist.

Was shooting the 370 Maxi. 65 -80 grns of powder.

I'm having trouble with PRB accuracy and my patches keep getting blow to bits. I've tried several different patches with different lubes.

It is a barrel that I saved ( or at least thought I saved ) from the rust heap. It looks pretty good now if I don't say so myself.

I was thinking of giving up on the PRB's but perhaps I can make another run at them.

I never had good luck with PRB out of my renegade either, but i did with conicals. you might try a recoil pad if your getting banged around or the 320 maxi. i did on the .54 with 90 gr pyrodex and a 430 gr conical i had to lol. Ray

Black Widow bullets makes (or did make) a tipped hollow point Maxi Ball type of conical in a 270 grain. I always wanted to try them. One reason being for the reduction in recoil as apposed to a 370 grain maxi ball and the second reason being for a better (flatter) trajectory and longer range.

The real bullets home cast of pure lead is about as good as it gets for a combination of good shooting and low cost. My first wife took a number of deer with them and they worked fine for that also. She used 90 gr of RS and shoot decent groups at 100 yds to in a 1 in 56 twist underhammer.
