Round ball in an Acurra V2?
 

I am new to muzzle loading this year. I have been using powerbelts and 777. Can I make my own round lead bullets and shoot them with a patch like folks used to do with the traditional muzzleloaders? I imagine the accuracy would be reduced but what I want to know is will it harm the gun at all.

Shooting patched roundballs will not harm the rifle at all. Even though it has a fast twist barrel, many of them will shoot roundball very accurate if you reduce the powder charge to lets say... 50 grains of powder. If you push the ball to fast it skips the rifling and down not get the spin on it. I shoot a Knight Wolverine with a fast twist. I shoot 40-50 grains of loose Pyrodex RS and a patched roundball with some amazing accuracy. Although I have found that long distance shooting the accuracy falls off. Whether that is caused by me, the rifle, or the low powder charge I can not say. But out to 50 yards it does real well. Try it, it might surprise you.

Won't hurt the gun a bit temphank. Patched ball shooting is fun and cheap, so go for it.

You'll likely get your best accuracy with light loads of around 50 or 60 grains of powder. But muzzleloaders are surprising beasts and you never know how well a gun will do with any particular load and bullet until you try. Give us a report when you see what your V2 does.

I tried it when I had an Accura. As was said above. You have to use light loads for it to be accurate.

So, it's only good for small game.

Not to be rude, but why buy a new inline and then want to shoot round balls? just doesn't make sense.. enjoy Ray

`Cause a man's got to play with something Builder. Any you won't go blind playing with patched balls in an in-line. :D

Actually is it a great and inexpensive way to break in a rifle, and get used to the trigger, hold, sight picture, etc. I recommend it. No matter what rifle. And with home cast roundball and some pillow tick, you shoot light powder loads.. fun and cheap.

In just got back from the range. I took 15 shots with Thor bullets and BH 209. Lets see how that works out.

Thor bullets.........$1.46 ea x 15 = $21.90
BH 209...............$.50 ea x 15 = $ 7.50
Primer.................$.05 x 15 = $.75
Total $30.15

A PRB would cost me $2.25 for the same amount of shooting, and my shoulder wouldn't be sore.

One can shoot saboted bullets and still shoot cheaply lol. buy some bulk rainer or cheap JHP bullets and sabots and use pyrodex or BP. you can also decrease the load with them..to each there own, just still can't see doing it.. Ray
