Who else likes a traditonal Hawkin?

I like to shoot 100 grains of ffg black powder with a 530 grain round ball and iron sights on my 54. cal. I also have an inline. However I have preferd to use the old hawkin. Guess i could try a flintlock some day or some kind of flash pan for even more of a chlenge.

Poor Man

I have lost interest in the Hawken... but the Renegade has captured eveything that was lost... I really do like them...

Bought an inline two seasons ago...still shooting the Hawken. Haven't even put a bullet through the new one.

I watched Jeremiah Johnson again this afternoon. Every time I watch that movie I want to run out and buy another Hawken!! Tom.

bronko22000 03-04-2011 06:02 PM

I would really like to get an actual Hawken and not a T/C, CVA or other brand's copy. The Browning was a real close replica. But the actual 'Hawkens' are a bit pricey for my blood. Maybe some day.

Poor Man, don't even think about getting a flintlock. The satisfaction of shooting a good group with one, or taking a deer with a rocklock has been know to cause an irreversible condition known as "flintergrinning". :)

Bronko, it seems to me that the Lyman Great Plains is a pretty darn good representation of the generic Mountain Rifle (certainly closer than TC's Hawken). Body styles vary, but my GP feels better at my shoulder than either the TC Hawken or Renegade.

cayugad 03-04-2011 07:16 PM

I like the T/C Hawkins rifle. It shoulders well, and functions real good. I also like the Renegade and Trade Rifle.

Josmund 03-05-2011 03:46 AM

My first BP rifle was an Omega. Bought it to have the coveted " Any Deer " tag.

Where I hunt we have a mix of Muleys & Whitetails. With a center fire you have a tag for one or the other. Of course, I'd have the wrong tag when a nice buck of the other species would walk by.

I must admit I struggled prior to finding this board but with all the help here I had the Omega shooting MOA. I was done messing with the Omega.

Then, at a gun show, I found a never fired Disc Elite 45. I bought it and in one range session it was zeroed right in. Boring!

Now I have the bug. This forum fuels the bug daily. I buy a TC Hawken on the cheap and absolutely love all the different combos. Maxiballs, PRBs.. I'm going try sabots today. Plus the open sights keep you guessing. Was a bad load or was I off?

The bottom line... I love tinkering with the Hawken as a scoped inline is just too easy. That's accuracy is your objective. There are other things to play with.

Anyone have a good 54 Renegade for sale? it
It's next on my list.

Mines not for sale. But if you check Gunbroker or ebay you can find a good deal. Even if you just find the complete stock minus the barrel. Then go to GM and buy the barrel you want for it. I love my Renegades. Almost wish TC would start making them again. You could always buy a Lyman new. Probably be cheaper then putting together a Renegade.

I was going to build an authentic Hawken. I love them.

Then I decided I didn't want to wear 1840 clothing in Colorado winters, and carrying an 11 lb gun in the snow.

It's romantic, but not very practical.

The Thompson Center Hawken is a mis-named modern muzzleloading rifle. Somebody ought to sue them; they ought to rename the thing out of professional consideration for the muzzleloading community. We are not stupid--a little research reveals the true style of a real plains era rifle, and the T/C Hawken is not it. The Renegade, however, is more to the specs.

I always thought the CVA Mountain Rifle was a very good plains rifle. The Lyman GPR is also quite good, and I own one in .54 flintlock.

Another good one was the Navy Arms Hawken, but I haven't heard much from them since the 80s.

Gm54-120 03-06-2011 03:39 PM

I pretty much prefer the Renegade in 54 for PRB or a Sporter Hawkins carbine with a fast 1-24 twist for conicals. Ive never owned either but those two are most appealing to me.

They might not be a true Traditional but neither am i.

wetpwdr53 03-17-2011 06:01 PM

Traditional Hawken

I purchased a 50 cal renegade about 10 yrs. ago. It took me forever to find justget the right combination of powder, projectile, that it liked. Unfortunately my goal of harvesting a deer with it hasn't happened yet. I refuse to go to a fancy inline until that happens.

I've heard that TC will still make you a Renegade in the custom department.

I'm guessing it won't be cheap.

Hawkens T/C

Hello everyone
Just joined your site
I have two Hawkens T/C's, One Kit .45 Senca (#K133647) I built and one factory built .54(#245892), I bought at a Garage sale. Both early 80's, (the kit was bought new 6/79).
The factory built has checkered forearm and pistol grip, it's like brand new condition.
Well thought I'd just touch base with you all, have a good day.

Woody

Hey there Dymoke. Welcome to the forum. I think you will enjoy time here.

That's a nice pair of sidelocks you have there. I'm a sidelock fan myself and have more than I probably need. But I'm not letting any of them go.

Do you shoot yours often? Hunt with them? It would be great to see a picture of that checkered stock .54.

bronko22000 06-04-2011 10:23 AM

I can't remember how many traditional MLs I have right now. But they are all T/C Hawken model save one which is a T/C Cherokee .32 cal. Most have GM LRH barrels and are in .45 and .50 cal. percussion and flintlock. I like the way they shoulder and fit.

Sounds to me like you might be ready to order a set of plans [copy of the Hawkins in the museum in ST Louis] from the St Louis Museum, and go to work. The satisfaction of shooting a very close copy is great especially when you have built it your self.

cayugad 06-04-2011 01:05 PM

Traditional rifles and I go way back. I started with a .54 T/C Renegade. The Renegade is still one of my favorite rifles, although I do like the T/C Hawkins. Some other nice traditional rifles are the T/C New Englanders. As for being "period correct" I could care less. I just love to shoot and see what I can make them do.

bronko22000 06-04-2011 02:32 PM

Lee
I've been looking at them for sure but the prices are pretty salty. I need one more T/C to pretty much complete my set and that is a T/C Hawken Cougar. I currently found one and have an offer placed on it waiting for a response.

Muley Hunter 06-04-2011 03:56 PM

I'm getting close to ordering one of these to build. It's as close to a real Hawken as you can get.

nchawkeye 06-04-2011 04:45 PM

That 1 1/8 tapered to 1 inch barrel will be pretty heavy....I built a .54 back in the 80s before swamped barrels became popular and it's 1 1/16 ro 15/16s...Mine is 38 inches long and it's not too bad but I've often wished I had stuck to my guns on a swamped barrel...

I know you'd prefer a Hawken style but you can get a .54 from Jim Chambers in his Isaac Haines gun...That would make a nice, light weight hunting rifle...

I thought about a long rifle. My plans are to join up with the AMM, and they have a good active Colorado group here. In looking at all the pictures they posted they all seem to use long guns. Which I read was the majority of what the mountain man used.

It's so hard for me to get away from the Hawken. I love the gun, and it is PC for some MM. If you look at the Kit Carson gun Don makes it comes with a 31" - 34" barrel. The real Kit Carson was 31". That shouldn't be too heavy.

I do know i'll need a flint to be accepted with the AMM. It seems to be all they use. Which wouldn't be PC for the later Hawkens.

Everything is riding on being accepted with the AMM. On my own i'll go Hawken. With AMM i'll go long rifle in a flint. We'll see how it pans out.

50calty 06-04-2011 05:50 PM

I wouldn't mind having that Lewis and Clark rifle. Would be fun to shoot and own.

caplock 06-05-2011 07:37 PM

I too have a .54 Hawkin Rifle, made by Lymann for Cabelas. Had it since around 86, great gun, fun to hunt with still shoots good.

Muley Hunter 06-05-2011 08:56 PM

Lyman doesn't make guns.

Investarms makes guns for Lyman and Cabelas.

Gm54-120 06-06-2011 05:38 AM

IIRC Investment Arms barrels come from Italy and Italy has some of the best barrel quality control of any country. Some of the Cableas guns are made by Pedersoli (also Italy) and they are extremely high quality......usually.

IMO it would be hard to go wrong with either brand. Im not a big sidleock fan but IF i ever buy one it will be the Cabelas Sporter Hawkens carbine in 54cal. While not a true traditional, its a nice big boomer. :D

Muley Hunter 06-06-2011 06:19 AM

Be careful with Cabelas. Some of the guns are made by Traditions.

rafsob 06-09-2011 10:28 AM

I love all my traditional rifles. That doesn't mean I have sold my inlines. They have a special spot in my heart.

Some of my lovelies:
