Thanks for posting, the Lewis and Clark exhibit passed thru St. Louis and they had a replica on display it is pretty amazing they had the technology to do this, the pump was a little hand pump and you would have thought there is no way it would charge that gun but it sure did. Missouri just last year now allows the use of a 40 caliber air gun as a legal method to take deer. I have researched it and they run around 600-700 buck for one. No thanks but they are neat. Our conservation magazine did an article on one that was interesting. Here it is.

If you click on the photos, it shows 3 pictures, the gun and bullet, the deer kill and a safety photo of the boy and dad.

I had read about their air rifle. Also Meriwether Lewis was said to be an outstanding marksman. I read how it was used to shoot small game, but from the sounds of that, it should take something like a deer as well. Very interesting Video there Rebel Hog. Thanks for posting that.

Guys, if you haven't read Undaunted Courage by Stephen E. Ambrose you need to get a copy. It's a "must read". One interesting occurance is that early in their trip heading West members of the Corps of Discovery expressed dismay at being served dog at Indian feasts. But by the time they were heading back East they had developed quite a taste for dog meat and were concerned about how they would get it back home without upsetting their friends and neighbors.

Check out the air rifles from Quackenbush, 45 and 50 caliber with enough power to harvest big game with some range limitations.
